Keir Starmer has said Britain’s nuclear deterrent is the front line of our defence as he warned the UK must not take its eyes off Russia amid the Iran crisis.
The Mirror was given rare access to join the Prime Minister as he boarded a nuclear-armed Vanguard-Class submarine off the west coast of Scotland as it returned from a record 206-day deployment.
His top-secret visit to greet Royal Navy submariners on "Day Zero" - their return to UK waters from their lengthy patrol - comes at a moment of sky-high global tensions.
And his decision to showcase Britain's nuclear arsenal will serve as a fresh warning to Vladimir Putin, as the Russian leader seeks the cover of the conflict in Iran to continue his aggression.
Mr Starmer said the nuclear-armed submarines were the front line of Britain's defence, and served to warn off Putin and other threats.
Speaking to the Mirror from Faslane, he said: "It's the most important capability we have as a country, and it has kept us safe for many years. It is committed to Nato, and therefore it's not just kept the UK safe, it's helped to keep Nato safe.

What a fool that man must be.
It’s probably their only sub that still functions.
You have to start asking questions, why would Putin invade any country in the EU or NATO, almost all of the EU countries are in the process of destroying themselves, Putin’s best option is to sit back and watch them.
What the heck could the UK do in a war? No navy to speak of. When was the last time their army or air forces were in a combat operation?
Another reason for Putin to keep the war going in Ukraine. The EU is not going to survive in 5 years. Ukraine will collapse without support from their allies.
Starmer’s headed for the turd bin of history.
Don’t we yet have armed drones equipped with magnetic anomaly detectors that can sit on the bottom and wait for a sub to go by? It would seem to me that a MAD pointed upwards would be much more proficient.

I have served in the navy or been a SSBN or SSN I was under the impression that normal tours were 70 days. 207 days on a sub would require 2-3 at sea replenishments if the math holds true that food is the limitation for the crew.
207 days seems like an aboslute torture session and proves that they don’t have a rotation or constanlty available deterrence.

They have 4 Vanguard class SSBNs and have maintained a continuous patrol since 1969.
It’s becoming an increasingly difficult task given the age of the equipment.
200 days at sea and submerged is a crime against humanity.
If your only deterrent against aggression is “I will nuke you”, and the aggressor has lots of nukes - it isn’t much of a deterrent.
It is NATO not Nato, you UK imbeciles.
U.S. Navy boomer subs go for 3 to 4 months patrols. One blue crew takes out the sub for 3 to 4 months (usually 3 months) to a foreign port and another gold crew brings the sub back to the U.S. port.
