Spirit Airlines could dissolve as soon as today and leave passengers who have already booked tickets stranded at airports around the country.
The carrier filed for bankruptcy twice between November 2024 and August 2025, and it currently remains under Chapter 11 protection.
Spirit was able to survive based on the assumption that jet fuel prices would remain stable and that it would be able to maintain its passenger capacity at 80 percent, hoping to exit restructuring in early summer.
But since the war with Iran, jet fuel prices have nearly doubled in large cities such as New York, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, and the airline operated at an average capacity closer to 74 percent in the last fiscal quarter.
Spirit's creditors are thus worried about the long-term survivability of the company and are set to dissolve the airline at any moment.
When other airlines have gone out of business in the past, they tend to essentially disappear overnight. If Spirit's creditors tell the company to cease operations and liquidate, the same could happen.
At the moment, the carrier says it is operating normally, continuing to serve passengers and operating its flights. Although there is an imminent risk of the company being dissolved, no specific date has been shared, leaving travelers in limbo.
Passengers who have already booked tickets with the airline and are expecting to fly in the immediate future could be caught off guard with no way to get home.

As I understand things, airlines normally buy futures to cover their fuel needs.
Sprint might post their contracts online to reassure current and potential customers.
“80 percent”
The only flight I’ve ever flown that wasn’t full was a flight from LAX to Dulles in 1978.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.

Gosh, I guess the DNC media shills will not try to blame this on President Trump then.
A couple of Augusts ago, mrs jimfree and I were on vacation as I was competing in an age group track meet in Gotenburg. While we were there Play Air stopped flying in and out of Sweden. After some early panic we were able to rebook out of Copenhagen where they still flew. It was a great train ride down into Denmark and a nice tourist day there before we flew home.
Play stopped operating entirely last year.
i flew spirit a couple times. Thought they were fine. Sad to hear they may be going under.
Airport lounge chaos goes viral as kids run wild and passengers ditch basic etiquette
Spirit the Carnival cruise of airlines
Spirit is almost certainly buying fuel on a “cash-and-carry” basis, as any futures contracts it has signed could be worthless while the company is in bankruptcy.
Where will we go to view hilarious Airport Chimpouts with Spirit Airlines gone?
I used to fly a lot. My best advice is to avoid the discount airlines as much as possible. Whatever savings they offer is largely an illusion, since they charge for basic services. I think it was Wizz Air in Europe that had a pay per minute phone line for customer service, like it was phone sex. Sadly, the regular airlines have become more like the discount airlines. Any airline that wants to weigh my carryon at the gate, I avoid.
I actually like their rocker back seats with limited recline since it also means some jagoff isn’t trapping you by reclining their damn seat almost into your lap.
If you flew a lot you would know that frequently flying has loyalty perks to include free baggage.
If you’re lucky enough to live near a Spirit route and have need for frequent commuter flights, Spirit is an incredible value if you have free baggage. Flying direct to work destination on Spirit is often literally $60. And up until recently I have not had any issues with Spirit timeliness....with their strained network now with cuts service has declined some.
I’m a big fan of Spirit.
From your link:
“Stories are going viral about passengers raiding complimentary buffets in lounges, and children wreaking havoc while distracted parents are unfazed.
At one airport lounge in a major New York City airport not long ago, witnesses watched in shock as a couple ordered six signature burgers and multiple orders of buns.
Instead of eating the premium patties, the couple stuffed the burgers into a large duffel, adding desserts snatched from the buffet, the blog added.
Then, to conceal the heist, apparently, the couple stashed the greasy plates behind decorative planters, the blog noted.”
Unbelievable
Spirit is the ghetto airline. Good riddance.
If you’re gonna be stranded away from home, an airport is certainly aconvenient location for it.

Agree. As long as you understand what you are getting into when you book with Spirit, with the extra fees for every little thing, and plan accordingly, it’s not a bad choice for a cheap flight.
