US likely to extend Russian oil waiver to temper Iran war shock: sources

US President Donald Trump’s administration is likely to extend as soon as Friday (Apr 10) a waiver allowing countries to buy some sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The US Treasury Department has allowed purchases of Russian oil and products at sea since mid-March with a 30-day waiver that expires on Apr 11, part of efforts to control global energy prices during the US-Israeli war with Iran.

Russia’s presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev had said that the original waiver would free 100 million barrels of Russian crude, equal to almost a day’s worth of global output.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Trump in the White House on Thursday (Apr 9) to talk about extending the waiver, and they agreed it was a good idea, one of the sources said, asking not to be named.

Officials at the White House and Treasury Department did not immediately comment on the matter.

Oil prices have spiked since the start of the war due to the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas had been shipped daily before the conflict. The war is creating the biggest oil supply disruption in history, the 32-nation International Energy Agency has said.

I think within a month that the United States will be dropping almost all sanctions on Russian oil. The Frukranians will panic.

It hardly matters, the Russians have been selling all of their oil output for years despite the “sanctions”. This is just giving the nod of approval and an extra wink to what has already been going on.

“Russian oil production, including condensate, was roughly 10.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024, ranking third globally. While production hovered around 10–11 million bpd between 2018–2024, output saw slight declines due to OPEC+ quota agreements and voluntary cuts in 2025–2026. Current output is impacted by voluntary cuts and infrastructure constraints. “

“100 million barrels of Russian crude” @$90/barrel = $9 billion

Enough to pay 200,000 fighting men for a year

Maybe that account for much of the TDS epidemic here on FR.

i remember many conversations with beaubeau freeper on here, insisting that Russian exports were doomed because of the new wave of sanctions, price ceilings, etc...

I told him it never worked before, and wont again. He thought I was an idiot. Well, history has vindicated me.

Trade and Commerce with Russia brings the cost of commodities way down in the world, they have much of what the West needs.

It is not just oil, it is energy, metals, and a majority of commodities like grain, wheat, food. Sanctions against Russia has been shooting ourselves in the foot.

” Inflation” across the globe started spiking the day senile Joe and the West imposed Sanctions....and when the West blew up the Nordstream it totally destroyed the EU manufacturing base.....” hold my beer, and watch us get even with Russia”.....Hillarious.

I was thinking that as well. Trump can’t wait to say”well this isn’t out war” just like Europe has been saying for a month. I was thinking he could normalize relations with Russia regardless.
