Orbán offered his support to Putin, likening his assistance to that of a mouse helping a lion in a well-known Hungarian fable, according to a phone conversation transcript obtained by news agency Bloomberg.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reportedly offered Russian President Vladimir Putin his friendship and assistance, including by hosting peace talks in Budapest, in a phone call last year adding to concerns about Hungary's ties with Moscow.
The news was first reported by US news agency Bloomberg on Tuesday, citing a transcript from a bilateral call in October 2025 from the Hungarian government.
“Yesterday, our friendship reached such heights that I am willing to help in any way I can,” Orbán reportedly said, adding: “I am at your disposal for any matter where I can help.”
During the call, Orbán referenced a Hungarian fable in which a mouse frees a lion caught in a net because the lion had once spared the mouse’s life.
According to the minutes, Putin laughed at the comparison.
Bloomberg reports the call largely consisted of exchanges in a diplomatic tone, including references to former US President Donald Trump.
Orbán and Putin had both spoken to Trump the day before about a possible summit in Budapest to host a summit to end the war in Ukraine, which ultimately did not materialise.
Orbán reportedly told Putin that their friendship had strengthened since their first meeting in St Petersburg in 2009. “The more friends we have, the more possibilities we have to stand up to our adversaries,” he said. He also expressed regret at not being able to meet Putin in person as regularly as before the coronavirus pandemic.
Putin reportedly praised Hungary’s “sovereign and flexible” approach to the war in Ukraine and questioned why Orbán’s centrist policies were causing controversy.

This is on top of reports that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó shared confidential EU meeting details with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during EU meetings.
Poland also kept out migrants, without being Putin’s lapdog like Orban.

That’s my reaction too. I bet his opponent is far worse. I assume the alternative is to do the bidding of the EU and allow Muslims into Hungary. No thanks.
Hopefully, the voters of Hungary will leave him on the wrong side of this election.
Gotta love the utterly inconsistent cognitive dissonance with you Americans.
One minute you need Greenland because Russia’s a threat to American interests (notwithstanding the >20 years they’ve been cyber attacking you, arming and funding Iran, etc)...
The next, Russia’s attacking Europe using the same tactics they used in Georgia and Ukraine, and you’re fine with it because you don’t like the Euroweenies.
Make your minds up.
Either Russia is still an adversary - in which case Western Europe and the UK provide an essential bulwark against it attacking westwards therefore you *need* Europe onside to build the EWS in the Arctic, whether you agree with Brussels politically or not...
Or, Russia is not a threat (and it doesn’t matter how much they keep attacking you and your interests), because fundamentally their concept of “multipolarity” (most of Eurasia should be under Russia’s control, most of Asia should be under China’s control, and most of the Americas north and South should be under the control of the USA) is consistent with Trump’s own vision.
If it’s the latter, you *don’t* need Greenland because Russia is not a threat and Greenland is on the Euro side of the divide far more than it’s on the American side.
What a coincidence to see all these “shocking reports” against Orban in recent weeks. Almost as though there were an election or something.
So, why would a far away foreigner read this forum and care what We Americans think? There is a lot going on in the world, probably a lot in your home country, wouldn’t it be nice for you to focus on that?
Orban's opponent, Péter Magyar was a member of Orban's governing party Fidesz, and was in fact married to former justice minister and Fidesz politician Judit Varga. He left the party when he found out his wife and the Orban's Fidez party, including the president tried to coverup sexual abuse at a state-run children's home near Budapest by granting a presidential pardon.

Swede not American!
Busy right now but I will reply later and explain.
> Orban is right on immigration but wrong on Europe, wrong about NATO, wrong on Ukraine and wrong about Russia. <
The problem (and it’s a huge one) is that immigration mistakes cannot be reversed. The rest, yes. But not with immigration.
If Orbán’s successor opens up the Hungarian border wall like the EU wants, the Muslims will pour in. And they won’t be leaving, ever. And neither will their children.
Something like 40% of Vienna’s schoolchildren are Muslim. And many studies have shown that children of Muslim immigrants are, in general, more radical than their parents.
Goodbye, Vienna.
Hopefully not goodbye, Budapest.
The election of Orban in Hungary, however, will not help the problem in Vienna. That must come from a sister party in Austria to Germany's AFD that will promote expatriation.
The problem is, however, the same, AFD is wrong on Europe, NATO, Ukraine and Russia, and no better than Orban. Likewise in Austria.
“MSM goes all out to ensure Orban loses the elections today. “
Hungarians don’t read American MSM, and they don’t need the American media to form their own bad opinions of Orban. They have seen that being mostly “anti-EU” does not produce policies good for Hungary.
Most Popular Online News Site: Telex.hu has emerged as the most widely used online news source in Hungary. It is known for its independent journalism, formed by former Index.hu staff after a government takeover of the latter in 2020.
Most Popular Online Alternative: Index.hu remains a top competitor, holding the second position in digital traffic.
Most Popular TV News: RTL (RTL Híradó) is the most-watched TV news program in Hungary, often competing with TV2 for the largest audience.
Most Read Daily Newspaper: Blikk is recognized as the most read daily newspaper, although it is a tabloid.
You’ve articulated the number one issue, Muslim immigration. It’s truly an existential issue. By comparison, nothing else matters now.
Trump is like a plumber who goes where the leaks and stopped drains are.
“Greenland is on the Euro side of the divide far more than it’s on the American side.”
On what basis? Nuuk Greenland is closer (miles) to New York than to London.
But the 30,000 Chinese workers and a few thousand indian truck drivers and 17% inflation are OK?
Just doing jobs that the locals will not do in the Chinese factories and building projects.
Orban loves the EU and has said he has no intention of leaving.
Putin is the lesser of two evils.
> Orban loves the EU and has said he has no intention of leaving. <
Agreed. But what makes Orbán different is that he will not follow every last EU directive.
Whether that approach is good or bad is another question.
