Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated his opposition to Taiwanese independence during a meeting with Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan's pro-Beijing opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. Her official trip to Beijing, the first such visit in a decade, sparked controversy in the self-ruled island that China claims as its territory.
Cheng's trip comes a month before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing for a summit with Xi.
The United States has been piling pressure on Taiwanese opposition lawmakers to back a proposal for defence purchases, including US weapons, to deter a potential Chinese attack.
Cheng has railed against the government's proposal, insisting "Taiwan isn't an ATM" and instead backed a KMT plan to allocate NT$380 billion ($12 billion) for US weapons with the option for more acquisitions.
While KMT party members regularly fly to China for exchanges with officials, its last leader to visit was Hung Hsiu-chu in 2016.
Cross-strait relations have worsened in particular since the election of Tsai's successor, Lai Ching-te, who Beijing considers a separatist.

Either she’s tall, or the reports that Xi is 5’11” are wrong.
Trump is tall. Looking at pictures of Trump with Xi, it looks loke Xi is also tall.
In other words, she is a democrat.
Amazing. She’s the opposition leader. May as well be the leader of Hong Kong for all the good Xi’s promises do.
If she were elected to the top post we may as well give the Chicoms carte blanche. Those chip making factories won’t have time to move.
They both look thrilled to be shaking the other’s hand.
I’ve always said the reunification deal has already been worked out between Taiwan’s Deep State and the CCP - they are just waiting for the right government and right moment to move ahead with it since some public opposition remains fierce.
We’ve seen those fist fights take place in the Taiwan Parliament. Their issues are serious. If they’re not 100% on the same page we should drop them. The military obligation of their young is a joke.
I hadn’t heard about young Taiwan Chinese not wanting to serve. Can you fill me in?
It’s not wanting to serve. Their legal obligation is on par with the Viet Nam experience of John Kerry.
You like spreading Chicom propaganda, eh.
Yes. Same sort of thing. Traitor.
Keep in mind she’s never been elected to anything. She’s like chair of DNC. A handful of old people in the party voted for her to be chairman.
Even President Will Lai has been caught in a fight or two when he was in the Parliament.

**You like spreading Chicom propaganda, eh.**
**Do you have a source?**
Come on people. Do I have to do it for you? Just google up Taiwan military obligations.
You can’t even post to the right person.
You’re spewing Chicom narrative based on selective distortion of polls.
Where do we see that here? MSM.
You’re pushing preferred outcomes of the chicoms and deep state for a reason. What is it?
Keep the razors in the medicine cabinet.
No answer, eh.
Do you even know what happened at this meeting.
