At a secret Feb. 11 Situation Room meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a four-part pitch for regime change, including a video montage of potential replacement leaders such as Reza Pahlavi. JD Vance was absent, stuck in Azerbaijan.
Appearing alongside Mossad chief David Barnea and military officials, Netanyahu argued: Iran’s ballistic missile program could be destroyed in weeks. The regime would be too weak to close the Strait of Hormuz. Street protests — fomented with Mossad help — could trigger an uprising. Kurdish fighters from Iraq could open a ground front in the northwest. Trump’s response: “Sounds good to me.”
Trump’s response: “Sounds good to me.”
The next day, U.S. intelligence pushed back sharply. CIA Director John Ratcliffe called the regime-change scenario “farcical,” with Secretary of State Marco Rubio adding: “In other words, it’s bullshit.” Gen. Dan Caine told the president: “This is, in my experience, standard operating procedure for the Israelis. They oversell, and their plans are not always well-developed.”
Trump dismissed regime change as “their problem” — but remained focused on targeting Iran’s leadership and military.
By Feb. 26, in a final Situation Room meeting, opposition inside the room was clear but fractured. Vice President JD Vance warned the war could spiral and drain U.S. resources, but ultimately said: “You know I think this is a bad idea… but I’ll support you.”
Rubio said regime change was unrealistic, but destroying Iran’s missile program was achievable. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was the biggest proponent of war and backed immediate action. Military leadership outlined risks, including depleted munitions and the threat to Hormuz, but all stopped short of opposing the plan.
Key officials responsible for managing the fallout, like the Treasury Secretary, and DNI Gabbard were notably absent.
Trump went around the table asking advisors their view, then made the call:
“I think we need to do it.”
The strikes began two days later.

What? No “anonymous sources close to the administration?” The NYT is obviously just making up shit on the daily.
Anti semites are destined for hell. Repent.
I would suggest waiting for the denials. There is an awful lot of detail there in that report.
“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you… There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”
Every other President was happy to kick the can down the nuclear road. But not Trump.
I guess I just don’t like moles. Neither does Trump I’m sure.
Don’t you believe it!
Naturally, I don’t know why. Maybe they all figured they might be dead before it affects them.
siting NYT
Good point and will be a good tell.
Yup
Many military assets are already in the area. Iran has been a pain in the arse not only to the US, but the rest of the world for 47 years. How many Americans have died at the behest of the Death To America Bitch, Iran?
If it were me, I wouldn't wait two weeks, I'd would attack Iran mercilessly like the Allies did Germany on D-Day and call it a day.
We knew this a month ago.
Everyone knew right from the very beginning that the straits would be shut down. In fact, shutting down the straits to demonstrate to China how we could shut off oil flow if they invaded Taiwan was one of the objectives of this operation.
“There is an awful lot of detail there in that report.”
From article: ““I think we need to do it.”
The strikes began two days later.”
In other words, you are so simple minded and so distorted by TDS, you actually believe a military operation of this magnitude can be put together in two days.
Who thinks thinks the NYT will produce anything truly factual and objective?
Does Israel lie and manipulate Washington for their own benefit? Of course they do. Israel has been in a virtual state of war since 1948 surrounded by enemies who wish to erase them, so it’s understandable.
The Iran problem (created by that sanctimonious twit Carter)should have been addressed by Reagan, but has been allowed to continue and grow because no one wished to be responsible enough to do anything to stop it. For me, the Iranian leadership had given no indication that behaving in a civilized manner was ever a consideration for them. How many have been killed and maimed as a result of those psychopaths? Far too many. Now, imagine a nuclear exchange between Iran and Israel.
Fiction has a lot of details, and they always add up to the author’s desired story. Truth has detail which some conflict even when the full story is known.
Using even modest critical reading skills one see’s quickly how this story is a work of fiction
One example being already mentioned in a post here, no way a military operation this size occurs in 2 days with no prior planning, and it had been weeks of moving troops even before the first night.
You believe this tripe because you want to believe it (TDS), not because of any reasoned understanding of information.
