Mexico now requires all cell phone users to register with CURP and photo ID by June 2026. Learn how expats can comply, registration deadlines, and what happens if you don't register.

If you have a Mexican cell phone number, you need to pay attention. Starting January 9, 2026, Mexico now requires all cell phone lines to be linked to official identification. This new mandate affects an estimated 137 million mobile lines across the country—and that includes the phones of American and Canadian expats living in Mexico.

If you fail to register your line by the deadline, your cell phone service will be suspended on July 1, 2026. This isn't a fine or a warning—your phone simply stops working for calls, texts, and data until you complete the registration process.

– New Lines –

Any new cell phone line activated after January 9, 2026 must be registered at the point of sale. You cannot purchase a new Mexican SIM card without providing identification.

Might curb youth protests if done on Obama-phones.

I wonder if this means that burner phones are not a thing in Mejico.

I wonder if this is an attempt to fight their narco terror war within Mexico.

it means that burner phones will be curtailed unless they have a phone number from another country.

so if you are an us expat and have a US phone number this will not affect you.

honestly I am surprised the US does not do the same thing, not that I want it.

Clicked the link... Nope. Article says it is to reduce spam calls. Their third failed attempt to outlaw “phone-based extortion”.

The U.S. already has this. Everyone just tells themselves we don't.

I wonder how this will impact folks along the border. AT&T offers seamless service across the border. So you should, in theory, be able to get a phone in Texas and use it throughout Mexico.

I don’t think it would work, threats of a Columbian Necktie, or necklacing somebody’s family should be enough for the cartels to get a registered phone for temporary use.

This will be great for Starlink’s T-Satellite service, which provides text messaging and limited data coverage through its satellite network. This service is available to users with compatible phones, allowing connectivity even in areas without traditional cell towers or under despotic governments.

I bet cartels don’t have to follow this rule.

Not likely, the cartels have had their own encrypted cell network for a long time.

Not only do they have their own networks, they have the ability to monitor a substantial amount of the traffic on the US side of the border even if not full conversations they can grab the metadata and such and its been one of their primary ways of tracking down agents, snitches, informants, etc for years
