Turkey and Iran make fairly sophisticated stuff nowadays.
I thought I read it was flying fairly low, so a shoulder launched missile was able to hit it.
It’s no mystery how Iranians managed to down the F15. This information has been available all day. It was shot down by a lucky hit from some Iranian with a shoulder fired SAM. SAMs are heat-seeking missiles. The SAM found the heat from the jet’s afterburner and got sucked into it. Now, we can ask where the Iranians got shoulder fired SAMs, but it could have come from any of several bad actors.
The Chinese and Russians are probably helping Iran.
Chinese <- selective import bans (less $)
Russians <- more US nasty stuff for Z-man
Iran not owning the skies is not enough.
It was probably shot down with one of our missiles the Taliban got when we pulled out or part the Muslim Brotherhood got from Obama.

We’ve done about 20,000 sorties against Iran and they were able to shoot down one F-15 and an A-10. Both pilots and the WSO were rescued despite massive effort on the part of the Iranians to capture them.
Pretty good odds.
If we keep losing aircraft, then yes, Iran got someone to help, but we’re not there yet to make any odds on that.
The Russians and the USA have had shoulder fired SAM missiles for decades. I’m sure some allies had some stolen by the black market. I saw an AIM US Shoulder fired missile in action 40 yrs ago. That missile could do a lot of damage even with it’s small warhead.
They got it from the puppet presidency Biden/Obummer.

F-15Es have no advanced thermal masking, and are vulnerable to common heat-seeking shoulder-fired MANPAD missiles.
