Promising dental student died in ICU overseen by remote ‘tele-health’ physician, declared dead via video: lawsuit

A 26-year-old promising dental student died in a Connecticut hospital’s intensive care unit that was being overseen by a “tele-health” doctor — who pronounced him dead via a video call, a lawsuit alleges.

Conor Hylton’s family slapped the wrongful death lawsuit against Bridgeport Hospital Milford Campus last month for allegedly not having a physical doctor on-site when he was admitted to the ICU in August 2024, according to the filing.

Hylton, who was studying at UConn School of Dental Medicine, took a turn for the worse in the hours after he went to the hospital seeking treatment for pancreatitis and a slew of other conditions.

In the four hours he was in the ICU, Hylton was never examined by an on-site doctor, despite his condition worsening, the lawsuit charges.

“They violated hospital policy because no on-site doctor assessed Mr. Hylton from the time he was admitted to the ICU until after he exhibited seizure-like activity at 4:30 a.m.,” the court docs state.

Instead, the hospital allegedly relied on “off-site tele-ICU providers to care for its patients.”

Eventually, Hylton “slid down in bed, his eyes rolled back and he … exhibited seizure-like activity, vomited, became bradycardic and code was called,” the suit said.

“He was intubated, but he could not be resuscitated, and he was pronounced dead.”

“The pronouncement was done by a ‘tele-health’ provider on a video screen,” the suit added.

Hylton’s family claims that the hospital never even told them that the dental student had been admitted to the ICU.

“[The hospital] allowed for extremely poor communication among the providers responsible for Conor’s life which is especially dangerous to patient care when the hospital is relying on off-site tele-ICU providers to care for its patients,” the complaint alleged.

“Doom by Zoom.”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Although I am curious as to why such a young man has pancreatitis.

My neighbor’s 28 year old son died of the same thing. He was a known heavy user of MJ vapes and energy drinks who lived above his parent’s garage.

The energy drinks that live above your parents garage are the most dangerous.

To be fair, a tele-doctor is not a guarantee of life.
If you're deathly ill, you might die, no matter what.

You never know what was used to suspend the active ingredients in those illegal vapes. It could have been contaminated with brake fluid or other similarly healthy things.

It is surprising that an ICU was using a “tele-health” doctor. If there is any situation that needs an in-person doctor, it is an ICU. And I would think that the state would have rules about how a person is pronounced dead. Doesn’t a licensed professional have to physically read vital signs? Not just take them over a remote monitor?

what were the choices, close down the ICU because doctors not available?

something/someone always has to be blamed.

If he hadn’t died, remote ok. If died with on site dr, then?

My lesson in this is don’t go to the doctor.

“ This tele-crap must end.”

End? Are you kidding?

They’ve barely started. In Michigan they are using “virtual nurses” for 11-7 shift. Within a year, 80% of psych emergencies in ERs will be virtual. A recent paper claimed (again) that AI diagnostic accuracy is >95%.

Now, all of this is built on a foundation of sand, a compound of greed, lies, and invulnerability to changes in the law (because the powers behind all this own Congress).

But when this all collapses, it will make a great big bloody mess.

“ And I would think that the state would have rules ”

Buying one of those seats in the State Legislature isn’t cheap.

Wait till AI takes this over
1. Name?
2’ Symptoms?
3. Age?
If over 80 ...
Deceased due to expired Medicare coverage and no treatment for present symptoms...

Even with a room full of medical personnel its not a guarantee.

The first time I died the doctors had been trying to make me leave because I was “perfectly healthy”. 15 minutes later I was in a room with the physician telling me that what he could see was happening was impossible.

(I got better!)

Don't settle, take it to a jury. There is no juror that would agree that going to a hospital dying and getting a glorified zoom meeting instead of treatment is okay. They will hand over a negligence/wrongful death/malpractice verdict in favor of plaintiff 100%.

This is what is needed, not some private exchange of funds under NDA. Bad, terrible press and a huge payout.

When you are in a hospital ER or any admitted room, your X-rays and other images are being read and interpreted by someone else in another state or country. Most likely, there is no doctor on site either. It’s crazy. Completely crazy.

Only you are responsible for your healthcare, personal safety, home security, education decisions, diet, nutrition, and welfare. Every time any of those is a responsibility you have relinquished into the hands of the state, institution, entity, or individual, you will be covertly mocked and abused for profit.

This country is ruled by evil forces. Do not choose to be in the game no matter how cleverly they serenade you with promise.

This tele-crap must end.

But tele-everything is The wave of the Future. Nobody needs to have physical presence anywhere ... physical presence is obsolete. Technology obviates everything "old".

Or so I learned on FR.
