What a Kentucky bill could mean for Sen. Rand Paul

WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., will be up for reelection in 2028, the same year as the next presidential election.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Paul didn’t rule out the possibility of a White House bid.

Under a new bill that passed the Kentucky House of Representatives this month, Paul would not have to forfeit his Senate seat to run for president.

House Bill 534 from state Rep. DJ Johnson, R-Owensboro, would allow someone’s name to appear on a ballot more than once if the person is a “candidate for two (2) different federal offices on the same ballot, if one (1) of the offices is decided by the United States Electoral College and the person currently holds an elected federal office.”

In a committee meeting on March 5, Johnson did not name a specific candidate, but referred to “an elected official at the federal level who has also garnered national attention for the possibility of running for the most important office in our country.”

Rand will have options in '28 thanks to the Kentucky Legislature and their steadfast support!

Man child Ran Paul needs to go back to Kindergarten and suck on his thumb while the adults get back to business.

Rand Paul has no effective support among the base. He would be humiliated.

In general, I like Rand Paul. But he has no chance to win as president at this point. Better to stay in his senate seat or try for governor.

He would be an election spoiler, just like Ross Perot. He made the Republicans lose and Clinton win.

Yup. I think that Rand will calculate whether or not his run might hurt the Republican ticket. If it would damage us, he will go for it.

It seems like a very bad idea to have someone run for more than one office at a time. What if he won both? What happens to the seat he doesn’t take? Does he nominate someone whom the voters did NOT vote for? Is there another election just for that seat? I mean seriously, what happens?

Governor is statewide but low profile nationally. Wouldn’t work for him.

“What if he won both?”

The chance of Rand becoming president is less than the chance of me becoming a billionaire.

How depressing. I’d rather they get a conservative to primary him in the senate. He’s way too boring to be president.

The state Rep who got the bill through could equally be talking about Rep. Thomas Massie.

🤔🤔🤔

What a stupid trick to play on the voters; you vote for a person, and they win, but your vote won’t count because they are taking another elective office they simultaneously ran for, so someone else will get the office your vote won, cause you actually lost.

The chance of Rand becoming president is less than the chance of me becoming a billionaire.

I know, but it still sets a precedent that could one day become problematic.

Rand Paul is a performative libertarian gadfly who masters theatrical stunts—like his 2013 drone filibuster—but delivers almost no legislative results after 15 years in the Senate.

Paul racks up protest votes and purity scores from niche groups, yet remains sidelined when real deal-making begins. His awkward, nasal, professorial style lacks the charisma or magnetic presence to inspire broad loyalty or build coalitions. His 2016 presidential run collapsed quickly, revealing limited appeal beyond a narrow base.

True leadership requires negotiation, inspiration, and outcomes. Paul offers contrarian soundbites instead. He is performance art: admired by few, ignored by most, and ultimately inconsequential in shaping policy.

Those options do not include election to the office of President.
