WASHINGTON — President Trump wants to make California’s Alcatraz Island into an active prison again — feared by criminals and impossible to escape. Trump’s budget to Congress on Friday includes a $152 million request to get the long-shuttered iconic lockup up and running again as a “state-of-the-art secure prison facility.”

An intriguing possibility, to say the least. Make Alcatraz Great Again...Why or why not?

$152M to restore Alcatraz? Sounds like a bargain. I’ve seen $1M to restore a roof. (Former govt building in PA.)

I have been saying this for years. First inmate? Nancy Pelosi. So that she can spend her last years on earth overlooking her beloved city and state. You know the one she raped and pillaged.

Although, my plan did not include a makeover. Everyone would be given a tent, a sleeping bag and one packet of seeds. Figure the rest of it yourselves.

Ol’ pragmatic me wonders about handling the sanitary situation on the island, which then lead me to offshore oil-drilling rigs...same problem. Hence copy & paste:

Oil Field Sewage
Offshore oil and gas operations, whether off shore or on land, generate sewage that can contain contaminants which can have a detrimental effect on water quality and the overall marine or land environment. As a result, oil field sewage filtration and separation filtration systems are required to lessen the environmental impact by adopting the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee’s MEPC.159(55) and MEPC.227(64) effluent standards.

Oil field

Trucent offers an oil field sewage filtration and separation system that removes the solids from the oil field sewage. The solids from oil field sewage are removed in a dry cake form that automatically discharges into a container, drum or tote. The filtered solids are considered a Class “B” sludge for disposal. The CentraSep® centrifuge aids in oil field sewage filtration by removing the solids so that oil field sewage treatment plants can meet the effluent standards of the International Maritime Organization, as well as other local, state and federal regulations for land based oil operations.

Just another distraction shoe meant to be all flash, No substance.
There’s no way that’s going to happen and he knows it unless he is truly a mental midget.
That place is so substandard it would never pass the legal standards any court including the Supremes would allow.

He needs to get serious. This isn’t the 1930s.

Deterrence...its a biatch with wings.

Bring Alcatraz back.

Great place for Comey, Brennan, Schiff, and that whole club of liberal fascists.

Put their names on the cells dedicated to their eventual incarceration.

I agree. There are much better places to build a new Ultra Max. A hole that will swallow Swallowell.

Why not make it both? A feared federal prison AND a beloved tourist attraction!

I wouldn’t go to San Francisco these days, but yeah, the Alcatraz tour is very worth it. But the tour would also make it obvious to someone why that place will never reopen. Trying to think of an example but is from a different era.
He’s just living in a reality show saying things he thinks sounds cool and tough. But it’s a stupid idea, couldn’t possibly be done for that amount… and not even needed. It wouldn’t improve the lives of any American in any way.

Instead of finding new ways to spend money, Trump should resurrect DOGE and work with the GOP leadership to start making some real spending cuts. He wants $500 billion more military spending so he can pursue forever wars, just like his predecessors.

Donald Trump is fiscally irresponsible.

Ludicrous.

The construction cost would be a multiple of the estimate, and operating costs would be astronomical.

Do we really have a problem with escapes from maximum security prisons? This is a very expensive solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
