Iran and Oman drafting protocol to ‘monitor’ Hormuz Strait traffic: IRNA
CNBC ^ | April 2, 2026 | Kevin Breuninger

Iran and Oman are drafting a protocol to “monitor transit” through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported Thursday morning, citing an official.

Tanker traffic through the key oil-shipping route “should be supervised and coordinated” with the two countries, said Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister of legal and international affairs, according to a translation of IRNA’s report.

“Of course, these requirements will not mean restrictions, but rather to facilitate and ensure safe passage and provide better services to ships that pass through this route,” Gharibabadi reportedly said.

U.S. stock indexes, which were trading sharply lower Thursday morning after President Donald Trump signaled that the Iran war will continue for weeks to come, suddenly turned higher following IRNA’s report.

Oil prices, which likewise had surged overnight, eased from their highs of the day on the Oman news, which offered hope that the Strait of Hormuz may be able to reopen in some capacity without requiring military force.

A reopened Strait of Hormuz. That is what Trump asked for last night and it appears it is happening. Of course, this was almost inevitable because Iran is desperate for oil revenue and the countries which buy oil from Iran are also desperate for that spigot to be turned on again. Think China, Europe, India, etc...

And with the Hormuz Strait reopened I think the war aims have been met. The military infrastructure of Iran DESTROYED. Also gone is their capacity to make nuclear weapons. Finally, their Mullah rule is severely weakened. A country whose supposed "Supreme Leader" is now a comatose Gayattolah.

Yes something is missing here. Is the oil price “wrong?”

Soldiers returning home?

Well, I don't think there will be any boots on the ground not even on Kharg island.

I’m assuming the U.S. is working in the background here (via Oman) and staying out of the limelight to help Iran save face.

No one would put up with the Panama Canal being seized or blocked by Panama,... why the hell does Iran get to control that strait? Just get an international force together and seize it, make some rules, keep the force there.

They still have speedboats and anti-ship missiles as far as I know.

“Iran is desperate for oil revenue”

As I understand things, Chinese ships can sail in and out with notification to Iran.

Who exactly are they "notifying"? I thought the leadership and command and control was gone. We are told the current missile launches are decentralized.

Are Ships Breaking Out of the Strait of Hormuz | Report from A Ship in the Persian Gulf

On the April 2, 2026, update of the Strait of Hormuz, we discuss three ships running the southern Strait in Omani waters.

Does this signify a change in shipping? What is the US policy toward the Strait of Hormuz. We talked with a merchant mariner who just returned from the Persian Gulf and what is it like onboard, what is the relationship with the US military, and why were cadets from the US Merchant Marine Academy still onboard ships in the region.

Finally, we look at the latest UNCTAD report on the impact of the closure.

Some ships are hugging the coast of Oman and exiting the Straits that way.

The issue with the Strait of Hormuz is that it is only about 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, which means that under common measures it lies entirely within the overlapping territorial waters of Iran, Oman, and part of both.

The fact that these two governments are even discussing a process to facilitate the movement of vessels through the strait can only be a good sign, from where I sit.

I have been Trump’s harshest critic on this fiasco, but I would assume that his team is smart enough to ensure that the U.S. steers clear of most diplomatic discussions about the Strait of Hormuz for one important reason. Passage through the strait would be governed by specific provisions of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the U.S. has no real credibility to be involved in those discussions because we are one of the only nations in the world that has not ratified UNCLOS. Iran, interestingly, is one of the others.
