Russian shadow fleet tankers defy Keir Starmer to sail through the English Channel despite threats that British special forces would storm sanctioned ships

Russian shadow fleet tankers have sailed through the English Channel, defying Sir Keir Starmer, despite threats that British special forces would storm sanctioned ships in UK waters.

At least six Russian vessels passed through the Strait of Dover unchallenged on Thursday, prompting the RAF to launch two Shadow R1 surveillance aircraft, which spent hours patrolling the Channel.

The tankers also dared to sail past the Royal Navy's headquarters in Portsmouth, the Special Boat Service's HQ in Poole and Royal Marine bases.

It came after another Downing Street U-turn on Wednesday, with the Prime Minister signing off on new powers granting British special forces permission to seize sanctioned ships in UK waters.

He vowed to go after Vladimir Putin's shadow fleet 'even harder' after Royal Navy ships had been restricted from tailing Russian vessels passing through the English Channel.

Sir Keir said: 'We are living in an increasingly volatile and dangerous world, facing threats from different fronts every day.

'Putin is rubbing his hands at the war in the Middle East because he thinks higher oil prices will let him line his pockets.

'That's why we're going after his shadow fleet even harder, not just keeping Britain safe but starving Putin's war machine of the dirty profits that fund his barbaric campaign.'

Dear London: Don’t start a war you can’t finish.

Sad they just let them go when they are supposedly sanctioned and not allowed. So what good are sanctions when they don’t even enforce them?

This is surprising. I would have thought the UK government would have done anything it could to protect the perpendicular traffic of migrant boats.

The Russians are a crafty bunch. They probably disguised their tankers as migrant boats.

And we all know that Starmer would not stop a migrant boat.

🤔

Looks like the US backed down on Cuba too.

Leftists are all about image over reality.

They need to understand that image without reality behind it is just a bluff. Bluffs, once called, show the paper tiger behind the image.

President Trump shows a real tiger behind the image.

How so? I do not recall President Trump saying Russia could not supply oil to Cuba.

He has kept Venezuela oil from Cuba. Such is a different matter.

Cuba is falling apart all on its own, very well.

“Pres. Trump has prohibited Cuba from taking delivery of Russian oil as part of a broader U.S. oil blockade. The U.S. Treasury Department has made it clear that transactions involving Russian crude or petroleum products to Cuba are not allowed.”

C’mon, Reuters? Trash. Rubio is working with people who matter in Cuba and we are very close to retooling it.

Any attempt to deliver crude to Cuba could trigger a direct confrontation with an administration with which Moscow has been eager to build a new working relationship. Last week, the U.S. Treasury Department, looking to ease the surge in energy prices caused by the war in Iran, temporarily lifted sanctions on countries that purchased Russian oil then already at sea. But on Thursday, Treasury issued new guidance that specifically barred Cuba from receiving Russian oil — a move that appeared to send an unsubtle message to Moscow: Back off.

The Brits have had a pathological obsession with Russia since at least the 1840s. It doesn’t matter if they are a monarchy, the USSR, or the Russian federation that tried to be normal… the Brits constantly screw with them.
It’s a remnant of that Great Game British thinking. They truly believe they should rule the entire Eurasian landmass.
They think they are still an empire.

Starmer is the perfect symbol for the Britain of today. (Weak.) I hope they can start turning things around in the next election by putting in someone like Rupert Lowe.

“threats that British special forces would storm sanctioned ships”

And it’s important to remember, these “sanctioned” ships are not sanctioned by the UN. The sanctioning is basically nothing but a decree coming out of DC and a free euros nodding their heads. Seizing those ships is nothing but an act of war…

By the way, didn’t Trump just decree that Russian oil was no longer sanctioned temporally? Clowns 🤡

Reading the article that you linked, the US was not backing down on the Cuban oil embargo - it was rather reinforcing it, by closing a loophole in the recent temporary sanctions relief that the USA recently gave to Russia, to keep oil prices down during the Iran War. Russia was just trying (unsuccessfully), to argue for an exemption under humanitarian grounds.

From the article:

“The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday (26 Mar) changed the terms of a waiver it had granted to sales of Russian-origin crude and petroleum products already loaded on tankers to specifically exclude transactions involving North Korea, Cuba and Crimea...

...A tanker carrying fuel originally bound for Cuba on Friday changed its destination to Trinidad and Tobago, according to LSEG ship-tracking data, a blow for the island amid a severe fuel scarcity that has triggered power blackouts.”

Thanks to gibsonguy questioning the Reuters source that ChatGPT had given me, I went and double checked, and it does now appear the Reuters article, especially the title, are very misleading.

The US did issue a new policy, to allow Russian oil to be sold to most countries, but Cuba is still being barred.

The Russian oil tanker that was prepared to dock in Cuba did not, and went to Trinidad instead.

The Russians are insisting the oil is only for humanitarian purposes, but their plea is so far their extend of breaking the embargo on Cuba.

Sorry for posting the misleading Reuters article, and trusting AI without double checking it as well.
