Amid the raging conflict in the Middle East, the astonishing events at Barksdale Air Force Base earlier this month have attracted only limited media attention. It is reported that swarms of unidentified drones repeatedly loitered over Barksdale between March 9 and 15, drawing no publicly known effective response from the military or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Barksdale is the headquarters of the Air Force’s Global Strike Command, which is responsible for the nation’s nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles and strategic bomber forces, including B2, B1, and B52 aircraft. The base is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing B52s and is the central hub of communications and logistical support for coordinating and directing those forces. The fact that potentially threatening drones were able to operate over such a critical complex with apparent impunity over several days, after a similar event, spanning 17 days, occurred more than two years ago at Langley AFB, is astonishing. Reports indicate that Barksdale personnel were repeatedly ordered to take cover as drones roamed over buildings and aircraft.

We get local Shreveport and Bossier City news. The drones apparently weren’t attacking anybody. Witnesses said they just look like your average consumer drones. Personnel didn’t really seem to be concerned about them, other than they were loitering over airspace where they shouldn’t be.
You wanna talk about the Chinese drones that were flying over sensitive US military bases under Biden regime?
When your airspace is over a key bomber base that coordinates that whole leg of the nuclear triad, it’s a pretty big deal and should be greatly concerning.
Could be lots of things. Blue on blue exercise comes to mind, one of those things with our new high-tech defense contractors to develop systems and technologies. Or, if they are not .gov controlled drones then it was allowed to go on for intelligence gathering purposes - communications, navigation and patterns of ops. Or if it’s some kids, some huge fines and felony charges are about to land on some parents. If it were a genuine live threat against Barksdale we would be rapidly climbing the Defcon ladder and the President would be on the phone with about to be dead Dear Life Leader somewhere asking when he can take his finger off the big beautiful red button on his desk.
I hold an FAA Part 107 Drone pilot license and there are very strict rules about what and where you can fly. ALL Military installations are off limits. I was supposed to video a house for a realtor recently and the house was a few feet into a no fly zone so I refused. There is an app B4UFLY that is required reading before flying. So, this is not as simple as someone making a mistake.
A big hanger for every bomber and fighter?

We do have an issue that is for sure
My old unit has KC-135s, you can see our aircraft from the civilian perimeter road. Not too difficult to get to them with a cheap drone.
No idea what kind of counter measures we may have but the old cables in the fence to stop vehicles though not obsolete don’t cover the new threat
Actually years ago we had one land with a bullet hole in it🤔
I agree with the articles conclusion that we need to develop systems to counter UAVs more effectively.
In particular, we need to devise cost effective measures to deal with drones in larger numbers in a cost-effective manner. Otherwise, the economics of this situation will crush us.
However, I disagree with the writer’s assumption that this was a nation threat / actor. You have a lot of really smart folks out there and especially in that community. If you want to see a bunch of nerdy geeks, go to an RC get together.
They know about jamming and geo-zoning, etc. I am guessing, this is a case of “Curious George.”

This may be the “rebirth” of </= 40mm anti-aircraft-artillery for the battlespace (just a thought), as these systems are effective at lower altitudes, short range, relatively cheap, mobile, mass producible and based on tried and tested/well developed technology we already have in hand (low risk effective solutions we can rapidly field).
Of course we should make these systems remote. I do NOT want to sit inside anything that actively emits from the rooftop on a battlefield.
The only downside is what goes up, must come down. These sorts of systems are only well suited for the battlespace.
Another alternative, and it’s already being fielded to some extent, is the anti-drone, drone. IMHO, over short range, autonomous after launch (just a simple seeker), mass produced, drones to collide with another drone should not be that expensive nor large (easy to carry by front line troops). This sort of system is likely what should have been used in this case.
Jamming drones or interfering with their internal electronics has limited effectiveness. It’s a game of cat and mouse. The emphasis should be on the physical destruction in one way or another.
lol xiden couldn’t/wouldnt even stop Chinese ballons😎
Thx for that info
I’ve seen some displays using hundreds of drones and I immediately thought how easily a swarm could be weaponized. An entire football field with them spaced out and pre programmed....... 🤔
This is going to come back to bite us.
.
That’s because he was their puppet.
US military bases should be no drone zones and any drones entering should be assumed hostile and shot out of the sky. These low tech drones and even the infamous Chinese spy balloon Biden allowed to traverse the country are potential weapons and could be armed with explosives or chemical or biological weapons. Ukrainian drones crippled Soviet strategic forces in a single attack on a major bomber base.
But this is also a law-enforcement situation. Short of disabling the drones, we can let them retreat, and follow them to their home base(s). In so doing, we take the first step to investigate, determine who is behind the incursions, then make arrests and prosecute accordingly.
our anti-drone laser systems are coming along very well. The Israelis have their Iron Beam system as part of the Iron Dome.
The electrical cost of shooting down a drone is a couple of bucks. Very good systems for low level drones under the size of a motorcycle.
Limited by rain and bad weather.
But, like the Antifa/BLM thug riots and the later hamas-supporter riots the US and states do nothing.
Simply shooting down is just virtue signaling. Those launching them need jail. Like decades of jail.
But, we will do nothing .
