In the old style light up electoral map for the 1980 election night coverage, NBC designated rats as blue, and GOP as red. That’s where that came from, and it’s just stuck as the universal designation

I think 1992 was the year that the media permanently painted the GOP as Reds.
The red for Republicans, blue for Democrats thing goes back to the ‘80s. I think that Tim Russert didn’t want to use red for Democrats because red was the traditional color for the Communists.
That’s like Democrats winning New York City.
