Maine will vote in November on a proposal that would ban transgender students from sports teams, bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity.

The Maine Department of the Secretary of State announced Tuesday that it has verified the signatures collected by proponents of the measure in support of putting it on the ballot.

That means it will go to voters Nov. 3 unless the Legislature decides to enact it outright, which is unlikely in the Democrat-controlled body that last year rejected several similar bills.

Supporters of the referendum, led by Brunswick resident Leyland Streiff, say it is an effort to protect girls sports and private spaces.

“If a female wants a female-only space or opportunity, she must be afforded that under the law,” Streiff said in a news release Tuesday. “Anything else is discrimination, and frankly regressive.”

Opponents say the proposal is discriminatory and harmful for students, and have criticized out-of-state funding in support of the referendum.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The Maine Department of the Secretary of State did her job for once and did not put roadblocks in the way of moving this to the ballot here in Maine. She will probably work to make the wording of the ballot question as offensive as possible. That is in her purview.

Now the work begins, We need to make sure the legislature does not pass this directly (Dem game playing) and then work to get people out to vote for this in November.

The headline of the article is inccorect. It does not ban trans people from particapting in sports. First of all it applies to both boys and girls.

The Protect Girls’ Sports in Maine ballot referendum will ensure that sports participation and private facilities in schools are designated by sex. Absolutely everyone gets to play sports, and everyone gets access to single-sex spaces.

I was told it also on the ballot in Colorado as of Monday.

Disclaimer, I worked on this petition gathering effort and will be working to get it passed.

We are hoping to use the campaign to drive conservatives to the polls in November.

Yes and I’ll bet the SoS is mightily disgruntled about it. She was the non-lawyer who tried to keep Trump off the 2024 ballot.

It’s kind of mind boggling to me that such a thing even has to put on a ballot and be voted on. But here we are....

We have seen this one before. Citizens will vote overwhelmingly to protect women’s sports and a single judge will strike it down.

Good. This will benefit Senator Collins, who has a tough re-election fight.
