Establishment Republican Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) appeared visibly rattled when confronted by a conservative reporter about his record opposing key elements of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
During a tense exchange with journalist Alison Steinberg, Cornyn was asked why Trump should back him in the ongoing Texas Republican Senate race given his long history of clashes with the America First movement.
Rather than directly addressing the question, Cornyn attempted to dismiss the reporter and accused her of working for one of his political rivals.
Steinberg asked Cornyn what he would say to voters questioning his alignment with Trump’s policies.
“What do you have to say to Americans who are wondering why President Trump should endorse you when many believe you’ve been against his agenda?” Steinberg asked.
Cornyn responded defensively, questioning whether the reporter represented voter concerns at all.
“Do you speak for all these Americans? I don’t understand,” Cornyn said.
Steinberg pushed further, pointing to criticism from conservative voters over issues such as immigration and gun policy.
“Many people are asking this question,” she said. “You’ve been borderline pro-amnesty, supported red flag laws, and opposed strong border measures.”
Instead of answering, Cornyn accused the reporter of being connected to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s campaign.
“Are you being paid by the Paxton campaign?” Cornyn asked.
Steinberg rejected the accusation.
“No, I’m just a concerned American citizen representing millions of other Americans,” she replied.
Cornyn doubled down on the claim.
“You’re a paid influencer because none of that’s true, and you know it,” he said.
Grassroots Conservatives Question Cornyn’s Record
The exchange comes as Cornyn faces mounting scrutiny from conservative activists and voters ahead of the upcoming Republican Senate contest in Texas.
Critics have pointed to Cornyn’s legislative record as evidence that he has frequently broken with Trump and the broader America First agenda.
According to analysis cited by critics, Cornyn has opposed elements of Trump’s policy priorities in a significant share of key votes despite claims from his campaign that he aligns with Trump nearly all the time.

Yeah, the only way he wins the primary is if Paxton backs out. Paxton polls ahead of Cornyn even if Trump endorses him. What a liar, he is responsible for red flag laws that Biden used to make everyone who sells a gun for more than he paid, an FFA dealer. And he has already said he wants this term to get amnesty.

I once gave $50 to the John Thune campaign. At the time he was running against Tom Daschle. Money well spent-he won. Something happened since that day in 2004. He started going stale in his second term. Seems to happen to most of them. Just look at what’s happening to Cornyn. At least the people in NC got Tillis to drop out-same with Ernst. Will the Louisiana folk do the same to Cassidy?
