The U.S. Navy has refused near-daily requests from the shipping industry for military escorts through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the war on Iran, saying the risk of attacks is too high for now, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The Navy's assessments spell continued disruption to Middle East oil exports.
The U.S. Navy has held regular briefings with shipping and oil industry counterparts and has said during those briefings it is unable to provide escorts for the time being, three shipping industry sources familiar with the matter said.
The sources, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the shipping industry has been making requests almost daily during the calls for naval escorts through the strait.
One of the sources said the Navy’s assessment during Tuesday’s briefing had not changed and that escorts would only be possible once the risk of attack was reduced. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
PRESIDENT PROMISES NAVAL ESCORTS Trump has said repeatedly in recent days that the United States is prepared to escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz when necessary. "When the time comes, the U.S. Navy and its partners will escort tankers through the strait, if needed. I hope it's not going to be needed, but if it's needed, we'll escort them right through," he said on Monday during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The U.S. military has started looking at options to potentially escort ships through the strait, should it be ordered to do so, General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Tuesday. "We're looking at a range of options there," Caine told reporters at the Pentagon.

They/Navy are afraid of Ukrainian style sea drones and kamikaze attacks by fast boats laden with explosives. Then crude oil or distillates onboard ignites.
sorry, but i cant believe this wasnt planned for...what has the Pentagon been doing the last 50 years??..forgwt the DEI and climate change garbage and war-plan strategic points in the world. No excuse for this.
this has put a stain on an otherwise historic operation. Securing the “straights” should have been the first thing done.
The ships is still getting through; they are turning off their transponders so they can’t be targeted.
“Straights”? LOL How about “straits”?
After the world saw what Israel and American can do militarily, You’d think the world would back off.
We made Russia and China look like idiots!
In days.
Despite my fellow Americans who are Democrats,
I don’t want to repeat the idiocy they made
us go through Korea to today.
Don’t mess with us.
We just want to drink beer and Barbecue in
peace.
Don’t mess with us!
Not even straight. It’s the Curve of Hormuz
this is exactly why we had to hit them now, can you imagine what the capability of Iran’s ballistic and drone arsenal would have been ten years from now?,, they could have obliterated all of the middle eastern oil production let alone decimated the cities there, Europe and possibly by then had intercontinental missiles.. it would have taken a nuclear war to take them out
I don't believe the high speed motorboats are a threat, they've been known about for +40 years.
Capabilities of the sea drones as recently demonstrated in the Black Sea are a threat that forces the capital vessels to stay well offshore.
Seize the Strait!
In other words … “We will escort your vessels after they don’t need escorts anymore.”
You can’t make this sh!t up.
They are installed on nearly all U.S. Navy surface combatant classes as a last-line defense against missiles and aircraft. Key vessels equipped include aircraft carriers (CVN), cruisers (CG), and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG)
System Capabilities: The 20mm Gatling gun system (Block 1B) engages anti-ship missiles, small boats, drones, and helicopters.
More likely they are worried about mines.
Consider the source...
The word is “straits”.
And the US Navy will do whatever the President orders them to do or they will die trying.
L
“More likely they are worried about mines”
Begs the question if they have no Navy left, nothing flying. How are mines being laid? I guess the answer is that Iran’s Navy demise has been greatly exaggerated.
Not surprising, could be they are afraid of running into each other. Sadly our Navy is a long way from the days of WW2.
Try thinking a little more, if they are escorting, they are not actively destroying more aggressive targets. They can be much more effective hunting than being on defense. It is the economic use of force. It is painfully obvious you have no understanding of military operations.
They destroyed 16 mine carriers in that time, if they were escorting, those mine carriers would have likely been laying more mines.
It may be fair to say we need more ships to allow escorting, but it is obscene to imply they are avoiding combat.
Your entire implication that they are avoiding danger is disgusting. You have no idea what you are talking about and have no place criticizing those who chose to go into harm’s way to defend the freedom of speech you use so ignorantly use now.
47 says US Navy cannot escort because of the many dangers, but urges oil & cargo ships to show some guts and go for it. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
