Washington State Dems Pass 'Millionaire' Tax and Business Icon Says Hmmm, Florida Sure Looks Good Right Now
PJ Media ^ | 03/11/2026 | Victoria Taft

Washington state Democrats are magicians! In the time it takes to say abracadabra, they made millions upon millions of dollars disappear just like that!

As if it weren’t bad enough that Seattle is under the reign of a communist mayor, statewide radical Democrats passed a bill masquerading as a “millionaire tax,” ushering in the state’s first-ever income tax.

As I reported in a recent West Coast, Messed Coast™ report, this "millionaire tax" was always going to change — POOF! — into a thousandaire income tax, and the Washington Policy Center has the email receipts.

But now, as night follows day, as thunder follows lightning, as FO follows FA, mere days after the most Washington-identified company this side of Microsoft  Starbucks — announced it was expanding some of its corporate and supply chain offices into Nashville and taking the jobs with them, comes another blow.

The guy who took Starbucks from a one-location coffee bean seller to a gargantuan, world wide concern, Howard Schultz, is leaving Seattle.

"His announcement came on the same day that the House in Washington approved a proposed [9.9%] income tax bill that would impact anyone living in the state who earns $1 million or more," a real estate website reported. It also followed an open vow by the most radical governor ever seated in Olympia, Bob Ferguson, that he'd sign this monstrosity.

Realtor.com noted that Schultz and his wife, Sheri, purchased a penthouse at the "Surf Club, Four Seasons Private Residences, a luxurious building that overlooks the ocean," which he got for a "steal" at $44 million.

So, Washington State passes their first ever income tax.

Incomes over $1M/year will be taxed at 9.9%. Married couples share A SINGLE $1M exemption, so if combined incomes are more than $1M, you’re getting taxed. This will obviously eventually extend beyond millionaires.

Here is what a tax like the one in Washington State does:

1) It excites people with zero agency and infinite envy. Beware of these people.

2) It will keep middle class people firmly in the middle class with no real chance of getting wealthy if they stay in Washington State. It should be clear that this IS the strategy. Learned helplessness of the electorate will keep Washington State’s current elected officials in office.

3) It will never allow the upwardly mobile of building any assets or real wealth unless they move.

Capping the American Dream is a dystopian and malevolent scheme. It cannot be a valid strategy.

But unless droves of middle and upper middle class people leave Washington State, this strategy will win.

I hope these people check their baggage at the border and don’t carry their ideology to the Red States they are heading too and turn it into the same cesspool they left.

a perfect description of democrats in general. I had to spend some time recently with an older sister, who is an absolutely stereotypical liberal, and I was shocked at how much of her politics centered on envy and hatred.

I grew up in RED California and left when all the “Blue” people moved in.
Went to Blue WA state, but lived in the “Red” part
of King county.
Finally all the Blue people invaded and made it
a sewer.
I went to rural Blue Hawaii.
Hawaii government here is so incompetent we
for the most part ignore it.
We have unregistered guns, Pakalalo(grows everywhere), big 4WD trucks and all the things that drive big city Democrats
(eg Honolulu) insane.
I found paradise in Hawaii. You won’t find me.

Not to worry. Nashville is already a liberal sewer. Pity, too. I went to college there and it was solidly Redneck Red.

For years up here the government has been taking away some of the promises made to Boeing which caused them to cut thousands of jobs, move their headquarters, and send a lot of manufacturing to South Carolina.

Microsoft is another. While cutting thousands of local jobs in 2025, Microsoft still operates its main Redmond campus, which has seen, in some reports, a net increase in employees in early 2026. But not near what was sent packing.

A third is Amazon. Amazon has conducted major layoffs in early 2026, including a significant reduction of about 16,000 corporate roles announced in January, following an earlier round of 14,000 cuts in October 2025. These cuts, focused on increasing efficiency and reducing bureaucracy, bring total corporate reductions to over 30,000, impacting various departments including the robotics unit.

These are all major businesses in Washington State and the last two may follow the first out of the state if the taxing continues.

It’s even better than that. When a person croaks (as we all will, no exceptions) in Florida, there is zero state death tax. This state death tax could be substantially higher for million dollar plus estates in other states.

Not a problem. When you’ve seen one redwood tree, you’ve seen them all. Unless you live in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas or Austin, we don’t see many RATS that destroy everything they touch.

The further left a locale goes, the less likely entrepenuers, investors and venture capitalists will invest within that locale. The high taxes, endless regulations and hostile government officials are not conducive to capitalism. Millionaires of course will move. However the lack of investment erodes the economy and impoverishes increasing numbers of people who live and work in those locales.

Unfortunately they bring their politics. And in the rare instance where the business owner doesn’t get political they bring family and employees that want the same loberal crap they are leaving. I’ve seen it many times.

If they have relocation packages from their corporations, they’re going to bring their ideology and turn the state purple.

Corporate relocation package = “I didn’t flee crazy leftism, I loved crazy leftism” = “my company fled, I didn’t flee!”
