Hungary said on Friday it had detained seven Ukrainians carrying around $82 million in cash and gold on suspicion of money laundering, as Kyiv accused Budapest of taking bank employees hostage amid a dispute over oil shipments.
The Hungarian Tax Authority’s decision to have counter-terrorism forces swoop on two Ukrainian armored vehicles transporting cash to Ukraine marks a dramatic escalation of tensions that have already resulted in Budapest blocking tens of billions of euros in European Union aid for Kyiv.
“The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is pursuing criminal proceedings on suspicion of money laundering,” the authority said in a statement.
“On March 5, 2026, it detained seven Ukrainian citizens, including a former Ukrainian intelligence service general, and two armored cash-in-transit vehicles, which were transporting a total of $40 million, 35 million euros and nine kilograms of gold from Austria to Ukraine.”

$82 million? That’s just walking around money.
US taxpayer money.
Send it back.
> $40 million, 35 million euros and nine kilograms of gold from Austria to Ukraine <
If I were an Austrian citizen, I’d be curious about that. But then again, Austria is just a minor province of the EU empire. So no questions, please.
My first instinct - why is cash and gold not leaving Ukraine, and moving to Austria?
"When a neighbor starts throwing stones, sooner or later the stones will fly back."
Because that would then be probably theft or money laundering.
Oschadbank, is Ukraine's state bank which does land transit of funds from Europe to Ukraine to keep the country running.
The valuables that were in the stolen cars belong to the state-owned Oschadbank. These are funds entrusted to the bank by citizens and businesses of Ukraine. They were transported from Austria for further use in circulation and to saturate Ukraine's cash market. The total amount of Oschadbank's funds, whose fate is currently unknown, is 40 million US dollars, 35 million euros, and 9 kg of gold.
The fact a Ukie intelligence officer was traveling with the cash indicates this was not a routine operation.

There is no corruption in Ukraine !
Can't compare to the pallet of cash Obama gave Iran.
Never underestimate Austria...two world wars should tell you that.
LOL, its a regular, weekly declared land transfer by the official State Savings Bank of Ukraine (Oschadbank) of funds from Europe to Ukraine.
Orban being an asshole right to the end
Fortunately this Putin Fluffer gets the boot in 1 month
Good riddance
What’s funny is there is old video of Orban being very Anti Russia and Putin. He just switched teams when the money was better on the other side. Orban is as phony and fake as politicans come. Yet still gullible observers swallow the contrarian/populist pablum spoon fed to them.
Yaroslav Hunka

The very Uke Nazis that Zeepers swear don’t exist !
