U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he was directing every federal agency to immediately cease all use of Anthropic's technology, adding there would be a six-month phase out for agencies such as the Defense Department who use the company's products.

"I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!" Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Well, looks like Anthropic thought SECWAR was bluffing, bad call on their part. I seem to remember reading removal of all government use could actually bankrupt them.

Just another group of "experts" and managers who think they should be running the show and not the elected government.

This is the easy way out for Anthropic: the hard way is Trump uses one of the innumerable war powers granted the Presidency to seize the company.

Anthropic is the company behind the frontier AI platform Claude, which the Pentagon has been using.

From what I understand, Trump described Anthropic as “leftwing nut jobs” who made a “DISASTROUS MISTAKE” by trying to “strong-arm” the Department of War and force them to follow the company’s terms of service instead of the Constitution.

The Pentagon demanded unrestricted access for “all lawful uses,” and after negotiations failed (with a reported deadline today), the administration escalated by labeling Anthropic a “supply chain risk” (a designation typically used for adversarial foreign companies like Huawei) and moving to sever contracts and bar further government use.

All this stems from a heated dispute between Anthropic and Hegseth over Anthropic’s refusal to remove key safeguards from its usage policy, specifically prohibiting Claude’s use in certain military actions.

That’s good after threatening to just take their intellectual property and use it how they want to.

Ya, and doing this way provides a little cover from people accusing Trump of giving contracts to Musk, they still will accuse but eh.

I hope that happens for Musk, I think his stuff is better anyway.

If all posted about that company is true, good bye. Someone has to have some backbone. Trump has backbone.

As much as I'm against letting AI run wild in the theater with weapons used as that AI sees fit and no human input, I cannot see allowing a civilian service provider to dictate terms to the military.

Both sides lost due to this decision, and replacing Claude will not be easy nor simple. Anthropic made a choice to stand on their principles, and that is their prerogative.

...by trying to “strong-arm” the Department of War and force them to follow the company’s terms of service instead of the Constitution.

The Constitution doesn't have anything to do with this. Anthropic is a private company, and the government wanted to buy one of their products/services. Anthropic, as is their right, agreed subject to its terms of service. There is nothing in the Constitution saying they can't do that.

President Trump eventually decided Anthropic's terms of service are unacceptable, and so cancelled the contracts.

Both parties are entitled to act as they did, although there's a chance Anthropic will continue to get paid for awhile depending upon the contracts.

No chance they get paid for a while, they are being declared a supply chain risk. That is instant death as I understand it. That is built into the defense contracts, if a company become a security risk the money is gone instantly

"...Someone has to have some backbone. Trump has backbone..."

Wow. Trump surely has that. Never in my life have I seen a President who operates with the same backbone Trump does, not even Reagan who showed every inch of his backbone with the Air Traffic Controllers, and what considerable backbone that was.

Just an amazing Chief Executive. He should write a book on how to do this.

Oh, wait...

Where does the name “Claude” come from, the lead character in the Broadway musical “HAIR”?
