Energy Big Tech companies to meet Trump at White House to sign pledge on data center power costs
CNBC ^ | Spencer Kimball

The major technology companies will meet President Donald Trump at the White House next week to sign a pledge that they will supply their own power for artificial intelligence data centers.

Amazon , Google , Meta , Microsoft , xAI, Oracle and OpenAI will sign the agreement at the March 4 meeting, a White House official confirmed to CNBC Wednesday.

“Under this bold initiative, these massive companies will build, bring, or buy their own power supply for new AI data centers, ensuring that Americans’ electricity bills will not increase as demand grows,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told CNBC.

Fox News first reported the development.

Trump said during his State of the Union address Tuesday that he had secured such a pledge from the tech sector, but did not provide detail on what the agreement entails.

“We’re telling the major tech companies that they have the obligation to provide for their own power needs,” the president said. “They can build their own power plants as part of their factory so that no one’s prices will go up.”

Data centers are facing opposition in communities across the U.S. as people blame rising utility bills on the facilities’ huge electricity consumption.

The Trump administration has closely embraced the AI industry as an engine of economic growth and a pillar of U.S. national security. It is an alliance that poses political risks for the White House ahead of the midterm elections.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger defeated their Republican opponents in landslide elections last November by campaigning against rising electricity prices.

THE UNSPOKEN SECONDARY ISSUE====WATER THEY WANT TO BUILD A DATA CENTER LESS THAN 8 MILES FROM MY PROPERTY.

THIS IS N NEVADA HIGH DESERT.

IT IS CALLED DESERT FOR A REASON-—ANNUAL PRECIPITATION ==ABOUT 4 1/2 INCHES.

WE LIVE ON AN AQUIFER.

THIS DATA CENTER WANTS 12.7 +++ ACRE FEET OF WATER.

THAT IS OVER 4 MILLION GALLONS

Agreed—living in the high desert with just 4.5 inches of rain and depending on the aquifer makes even 4 million gallons sound scary.

The good news is that most new AI data centers are switching to closed-loop cooling systems that recirculate the same coolant with almost no evaporation or ongoing water loss. Many in arid areas (like parts of Nevada and Arizona) are already using these designs to drop consumption by 70–95% or more, often to near-zero after the initial fill. It’s worth asking the developer exactly what cooling tech they plan to use—closed-loop + recycled water could make a huge difference.

The water is recycled. I used to design the systems infrastructure for data centers before I retired.

So it’s a onetime hit except for relatively minor losses over time.

The won by election fraud. Now they are trying to use fraudulent elections as commentary on Trump policies.

No one is going to believe what (who) I listened to while I ate my dinner - good way to lose an appetite. I was tired of the same old, same old from news and what people thought of the SOTU speech and the story from Tucson...

Bernie Sanders on C Span - a laundry list - a long, long list of the NEGATIVES of A I and power and water were two of many on his list. I should have been listening with a pad and pencil in my hand. I have long complained about what we’re in for and believe me, what he read off is not good for the country. Who’s pushing it and who will benefit? NOT we peons for sure..Sure he named names but we know those already. He named the # of jobs that will go away within at least 18 months.

High on the list was DOING AWAY WITH JOBS...any and all kinds! He said Congress is WAY BEHIND diving into it and understanding it. He said that not even the people in charge of it UNDERSTAND it!

Have never agreed with anything the man has said but this bears watching and listening for the good of all of us - all mankind! IMO

Make them stick with green like they try to punish us, make it their own medicine , wind solar or treadmill . Pb by example to and for them.

Stupid comment. AI is national security and Trump is in the driver’s seat...and he’s making sure it plays by his rules.

Bernie lies fluently & w/o shame.
The left have nothing but manufactured emergencies. This is one of them, like climate change.
We have had many inventions & innovations that have revolutionized employment and industry. Horses, cars, printing press, computers etc. People adapt and exploit new possibilities improving the human condition.

The left is basically stupid. Devious, devoid of moral compass, ruthless but thank goodness they are also stupid and lack self awareness.

I think you are conflating AI with the Left.

Some AI CEOs are Lefties (like Sam Altmann of ChatGPT/OpenAI), but others are not (like Elon).

The top VC firm in Silicon Valley, Andreessen Horowitz, is conservative.

Study up. I think you will be surprised. I was until I studied up in the last year.

It's a complicated subject. No one can be blamed for missing the rapid changes in AI politics.

Sorry, but the leaders on the left are smart, very smart. They know the crap they are selling will sell to many in the masses......and keep them in power and money.

Bernie is a perfect example. What has he done? Nothing. He flies around, rants, then lives like a king compared to the rest of us and almost all of his supporters.......yet they love him.

Lacking moral compass.....prerequisite to support commie socialist bull.

Trump said big tech power plants will produce surplus power so the excess will be sent back to the grid bringing *down* energy costs.

This is one of the brilliant moves to come out of the SOTU, and PDJT will pull it off. Because AI needs so much power, this move opens the door to small-unit nuclear power generation. The surplus capacity (they will overbuild) can be directed to consumers, possibly at lower cost AND free up regular generation and distribution services to towns and cities. Once the nukes are established and proven, we will at last have the only worthy green energy source proven safe and economical. We will at last be done with those hideous solar and wind debacles.
PDJT will establish a forever legacy with this move.
IMO.

Trump will solve this problem because the solutions are already available.

Closed loop systems.

Hopefully they will have excess electricity to sell back to consumers and upend the electricity monopoly the government allows.

Does this give anyone else pause?

I totally understand the motivation here but...

Is it good to have a private parallel power system?

Are our oversight mechanisms designed or prepared to oversee and regulate "private power"?

Is this approach not a disincentive for consumer power generators to not expand for the good of the general public?
