Roofers are turning down jobs. Painters are locking themselves inside the homes they’re finishing. Concrete crews have monthslong waiting lists.
In the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs, the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has slowed home construction to a crawl – at a time when Minnesota, like much of the country, faces a steep housing shortage.
The White House has begun scaling back its monthslong enforcement surge in the state. But across the housing market, the aftershocks are still unfolding.
“I think most of us would probably take Covid over this,” said one large homebuilder in the Minneapolis area who asked for his name not to be shared since some of his job sites have been targeted by immigration officers over the last few weeks. “This is misery for us in the housing industry.”
President Donald Trump has made housing affordability a central pillar of his domestic agenda, and the US House of Representatives passed legislation this month intended to encourage more homebuilding. But the president’s stepped-up immigration enforcement threatens to undercut that effort, sidelining the workers needed to build new homes.

Minnesota is pretty cold during the winter months, so I am not sure any of this work could get done anyway.
But then, I do not have a journalism degree so I am not an expert.
Sucks to have a business built on illegality.
“I think most of us would probably take Covid over this,” said one large homebuilder
Tuff noogies...ya shouldn’t be dependent on ILLEGALS.
So builders only work for illegals and thieves buying homes?
If your utopia was being powered by their monies, then find a place growing that does not have those problems.
Bet if they offered that to Americans they'd have lines of people waiting to sign up.
^^^ THIS ^^^
Are they building houses for illegals? That’s a shame.
Not buying it, turning down work because illegal immigrants are being arrested. NOPE. Makes no sense to stop earning money for criminal being arrested.
More like avoiding getting caught breaking the law hire, aiding and abetting illegal alien criminals and using cheap labor over hiring Americans.
Who wants to live in that dump of a state, anyway?
“”””Minnesota is pretty cold during the winter months, so I am not sure any of this work could get done anyway. “””
A lot of it does. I saw them digging a basement for a new home near Minneapolistan today. Plenty of construction keeps rolling through the winter. It sucks.
But, I do not feel bad for this builder at all. I did that sort of thing all my life. The difference is I never hired illegals. Screw him. This will be great for the legitimate subs who can get a better price for their work now that they don’t have to compete as much against slave labor.
I’m too old and worn out to do it like I used to but this is a great time to be in the business. ChaChing$$$$$$$$$$
The price for hiring illegals and paying them under the table is the same for every crime - a price is paid...
Ya, hope he goes bankrupt and an honest business picks up the slack.
Good demonstration of the media’s imperative.
Find a negative angle to anything Trump has done.
We are still digging out from a Blizzard here in Western MA. Yet, I drove by a home getting a roof today. I cannot imagine what they will find on that lawn come springtime...but they got the old roof off and a new one on by mid afternoon.
I guess when “ya gotta”, you do it.
Gotta love that CNN spin. Let me go through the CNN article archive to find the dozens of articles about how employers aren’t paying employees a living wage. Allowing a flood of illegals to hold construction jobs is a main reason that construction workers were not being paid a living wage, CNN.
When i was young and in construction all construction was done by Americans. Then they came and underbid everyone and soon had the monopoly. American males have never learned the trades much so there aren’t many crews available except the ones who have to be licensed.
“Ghost Day Care” was paying for houses ?
....... Ya ..... Kinda hard to build those houses without the needed low cost Illegal Slaves that America has become addicted to isn't it!
.
“Roofers are turning down jobs. Painters are locking themselves inside the homes they’re finishing. Concrete crews have monthslong waiting lists.”
Dogs and cats living together!!! If they were here legally, they could do the jobs. This was their decision to illegally enter the country and try to hide from the lie. Only groups like CNN would throw this crap out.
