Poland will use antipersonnel as well as anti-tank land mines to defend its eastern border against the growing threat from Russia, Poland’s deputy defense minister told The Associated Press on Friday as the country officially left an international convention banning the use of the controversial weapons.
The 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, also known as the Ottawa Convention, prohibits signatories from keeping or using antipersonnel mines, which can last for years and are known for having caused large-scale suffering among civilians in former conflict zones in countries including Cambodia, Angola and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Poland, which ratified the document in 2012 and completed the destruction of its domestic anti-personnel mine stockpile in 2016, withdrew from the treaty on Friday and says it plans to renew manufacturing weapons.
“These mines are one of the most important elements of the defense structure we are constructing on the eastern flank of NATO, in Poland, on the border with Russia in the north and with Belarus in the east,” Pawel Zalewski, Poland’s deputy defense minister, said.
He said Poland needed to defend itself against Russia, a country which “has very aggressive intentions vis a vis its neighbors” and which itself never committed to the international land mine ban treaty.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, nearby countries have been reassessing their participation in the international treaty. Last year, Warsaw joined Finland, the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and Ukraine to announce it would leave the treaty.
Russia is one of nearly three dozen countries that have never acceded to the Ottawa treaty, alongside the United States.

Poland is one of the only sane nation’s left, for now.
Unlike most, Poland still has vivid memories of WWII.
How has Russia become a growing threat toward Poland? Have the Ruskies been threatening Poland with invasion lately?
Polish globalists at work. Poland has no objective reason to whip-up fear of a Russian attack. Memories of the WW-II carve-up by Hitler and Stalin are not good enough.
Tough-minded practicality and hatred of Russia are in the Polish character. My guess is that Poland will go nuclear within five years.
A Polish soldier encounters a German and a Russian soldier, which does he shoot first?
The German - Business before Pleasure!
You might want to save some for the German border. Just saying.
First, they need to get rid of their German Prime Minister.
Poland has also been talking about getting the atomic bomb.
“Unlike most, Poland still has vivid memories of WWII.”
So does Russia, hence the animosity towards the neo-NAZIs.
Not that I've heard, but if Putin is successful in conquering Ukraine, Poland might be the next big prize in his attempt to remake the Soviet Union. Apparently, the Poles think so.
Lol, Putin invading and annexing neighboring countries is not enough 'reason'. Okay
Or calling any who opposes Russian imperialism a Neo-Nazi.
“Russian imperialism”
Wow. The Czars have returned and the royalty. Who knew.
And by the way, the biggest empire in the World belongs to the good old US of A who feels the world is their domain and they are free to stick the fingers in any one else’s pie, consequence free.
“The 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, also known as the Ottawa Convention...”
More accurately referred to as the Princess Diana Mine Ban Treaty. Banning land mines was one of her principal objectives.
Poland has never been on its own. Always dominated by somebody. Think of Israel not giving an inch. Poland has the US to thank for it’s freedom.
“Poland has the US to thank for it’s freedom”
Poland was also the home of the Warsaw Ghetto and some of the worst atrocities against Jews.
Poland was also the home of the Warsaw Ghetto and some of the worst atrocities against Jews.
It wasn’t “Poland”, it was the “Generalgouvernement” under complete German control.
