WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that all U.S. airlines must certify they are conducting merit-based hiring for pilots or face a federal investigation.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the action was to address "allegations of airlines hiring based on race and sex," and added under the directive "all U.S. carriers will be required to certify this practice is terminated."
Shortly after taking office in January 2025, President Donald Trump issued sweeping executive orders to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the United States and pressured the private sector to join the initiative.
There is no evidence that any U.S. airline is employing unqualified pilots. The FAA notice Friday said airlines must "ensure pilot hiring is exclusively merit-based to fulfill its duty to provide the highest possible degree of safety."

Gonna be a lot of white men.
This is such a common sense thing to do that is shocking the FAA had to emphasize it.
Important shift in the way things are done. But the directive should include mechanics as well. A great pilot don’t mean jack shite if the aircraft is losing engines and what not.
I know for a fact that lesser qualified persons have been hired as airline pilots based on their plumbing or skin color.
They had better get them out of the air traffic control towers, too...
“””””There is no evidence that any U.S. airline is employing unqualified pilots.”””””
That is sly wording, the question is —are they hiring the best qualified pilots who are available from the applicants, ranking from best to worst—.
A wise and politically astute move. Stuff like this wins elections, not venting over MTG, Massie, movie stars, etc.

That depends on what the qualifications are and who set the qualifications and why.
They should have started with the Army pilots. DEI in Army aviation has killed more Americans since 202 than DEI in scheduled commercial aviation.
United Airlines is the worst when it comes to DEI and Affirmative Action!!
“There is no evidence that any U.S. airline is employing unqualified pilots.”
It’s Reuters.
‘Nuff said.
United airlines announced a couple of years ago that their goal was to have by 2030 50% of their pilots hired be women and people of color.
Of course, they all only hire qualified pilots—they just dropped the definition of “qualified” by reducing experience requirements (i.e. flight hours).
Yep, United is the worst by far when it comes to merit.
That is is even a thing is a sign that Democrats collapsed society.
This should apply to every business, not just pilots.
Fir that reason alone, United should be the first target for the FAA.
And how many white men chose other careers instead of aviation because of the racist Didn't Earn It (DEI) quotas?
White men will still avoid such narrow career paths because the companies' owners showed their true faces, and all the DEI hiring will be back with a Democrat regime anyway.
