California is increasingly importing gasoline through the Bahamas — a workaround to a 106-year-old US shipping law that forces domestic fuel shipments onto costly American vessels.
More than 40% of the gasoline California imported in November was routed through the Caribbean hub, a record high which comes as drivers in the state are paying an average of $4.58 per gallon, the most in the country, according to Bloomberg News.
Gasoline refined along the US Gulf Coast — primarily in Texas and Louisiana — is first shipped roughly 1,100 to 1,300 nautical miles to Freeport in the Bahamas, where it is stored at large transshipment hubs before being re-exported.
From there, tankers travel another 4,000 to 4,500 nautical miles through the Panama Canal and up the West Coast to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
In total, the voyage spans roughly 5,000 to 6,000 nautical miles, depending on the ports involved.
At typical tanker speeds of 12 to 15 knots, the journey can take two to three weeks, including canal transit and port time.
The added leg builds extra shipping, storage and handling costs into wholesale gasoline prices, which are ultimately passed on to consumers.

If only CA had it’s own source of oil...
Gas could be $20/gal and the morons here would still vote 100% Rat.
Without Rat handout programs, the Mexican hordes would not survive here. Ain’t no way they ever vote for anyone who cuts off the river of cash going to them.
Look forward to a new handout program subsidizing gas for “underprivileged people of color”. It’ll be a big winner.
“Chartering a foreign-flagged tanker has historically been significantly cheaper than using a Jones Act-compliant vessel.”
Sounds like the Jones Act is a stupid idea.
That’s much better for the environment. (Rolling eyes sarcasm)
I thought they wanted high oil prices, to discourage burning those awful hydrocarbons and get everyone into electric cars.
Has a gas station near you closed? This California law may be why

I love to watch CA get what they asked for. Sadly, they’re too indoctrinated to realize they brought their misfortune onto themselves.
The State as a whole is far more conservative than a corrupted vote count indicates. GFY
Any time there is a hint of offshore drilling in California, the enviro-nuts go ballistic. Combine that with the oppresssive regulations on refineries that are putting them out of business and bingo! You get a crisis where the state scrambles to import oil from the Bahamas. Don't California environmentalists care about potential oils spills in the Bahamas???
> Sounds like the Jones Act is a stupid idea. <
A robust merchant marine is vital in a war. At one time the United States had a huge merchant marine. That’s no longer true.
The Jones Act was sold as a way to protect what’s left of our merchant marine. Others say it’s just an attempt to protect union workers.
Which is it? That’s above my pay grade to answer.
Might be both??
It’d be fun to see one of those tankers run aground and thoroughly crap up Malibu shoreline. And/or the San FranCrisco Gay Area.
Well, that's what they say anyway, but not exactly. Not EVERYONE. For some drivers, those who own Bentleys, Maseratis. and Ferraris, the cost of gasoline is mostly irrelevant - they can afford it.
The rest of the people won't be able to afford operating cars, whether IC or EV.
So the common people will save the environment by riding the bus or walking, while the elites own the roads and do what they want.
“Sounds like the Jones Act is a stupid idea.”
Jones act is not so bad. Without it, we would have Libyan vessels making deliveries up the Mississippi river.
AND THE PRICE OF GASOLINE IS NOW :_______?
>> The State as a whole is far more conservative than a corrupted vote count indicates.
By land area, I’m sure that’s true.
Apparently not by per capita measures, though.
And while vote corruption doubtless explains some of it I doubt that’s the root cause.
There are billions of barrels of oil out there, but the state stonewalled development & production, so most of the leases expired:

Given the state's demented political leadership, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for renewed leasing...
