Impossible’: Taiwan pushes back against Washington’s 40% chip supply relocation goal
CNBC ^ | 02/09/26 | Dylan Butts

Taiwan has told Washington that its proposal to move 40% of the island’s semiconductor supply chain to the U.S. was “impossible,” Taipei’s top tariff trade negotiator said in an interview.

Speaking on a local television broadcast Sunday, Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun said she had made it clear to Washington that the island’s semiconductor ecosystem, built over decades, could not simply be relocated.

Taiwan’s international expansion, including its investments in the U.S., is predicated on the notion that the industry remains’ rooted in Taiwan and continues to expand domestic investments, she said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC.

It actually makes them less of a target for a China invasion

Having spent a lot of time in Taiwan I can envision the actual main reason for not relocating here. Work ethic of the employees.
From a very young age the kids there value their education and strive to be the best. The kids wear uniforms and are proud of being a student. They go out of their way to help older people. Even as a foreigner they open doors for us.
This attitude spills over into striving to be the best employees also.
If it wasn’t so crowded I would relocate there. Once a lady chased us down for 2 blocks as we forgot our change when buying something. I had left it as a tip but they do not accept tips. Nobody litters. Even the trains, which are on time to the minute, are ultra clean inside.
Now picture a company moving here dealing with insane employees we have.

Good point, I would like to think that maybe they would change our kids way of thinking. I’d have to think really hard about that.

I hear Trump’s voice saying, “Well, okay. We’ll take 30%”.

--- "Taiwan's international expansion, including its investments in the U.S., is predicated on the notion that the industry remains’ rooted in Taiwan and continues to expand domestic investments, she said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC."

Surprise. Surprise. Surprise.

Seems every country will seek its own interests over a another nations, which should be obvious as we consider even ourselves.

Altruism, as an individual act, is one thing but it is personal, nor corporate. No corporate entity will voluntarily give a large portion of itself and its assets and potential away freely. Rather, as we are seeing in the de-industrialization going on in Europe. Corporate entities will seek to survive by "jumping ship" to somewhere where their capital is preserved.

Rather like Europe, Taiwan wants protection from the US against the mainland, but also protection against the US from seeking its assets. So many want "it" both ways.

Why would they want to move operations to America?

“Why would they want to move operations to America?”

They heard about our fine Unions who keep workers happy by making sure they don’t tire themselves out.

Common sense test.

Get out a map of the world. Then put your finger on a place that would make common sense on where to produce the bulk of free world’s mission critical semi conductors. My guess your finger would not be on a small island 100 miles from RED CHINA.

During Covid we really destroyed our work ethic (which was already going downhill).

When we paid everyone not to work well people got used to that.

Wow, a nation of 330 million and there are no trainable water tech candidates.

DO YOU KNOW HOW STUPID THIS POINT OF VIEW IS?
