Ken Paxton on course for John Cornyn runoff in Texas Senate Republican primary: internal poll
The New York Post ^ | 02/13/2026 | Josh Christenson

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has a clear lead in the Lone Star State’s Senate Republican primary over incumbent John Cornyn — putting the two on a collision course for a May runoff, according to a new poll commissioned by Paxton’s principal campaign committee.

The Pulse Decision Science survey found that 36% of likely GOP primary voters support Paxton, 27% back Cornyn and 15% prefer Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas). Another 22% said they were undecided about who to support.

Early voting for the March 3 primary starts next week, with a runoff between the top two candidates set for May 26 if no contender gets above 50%.

A separate independent poll from the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs also found Paxton ahead of Cornyn, 38%-31%, while Hunt registered just 17%.

A JL Partners poll first reported by The Post last week showed Hunt ahead of Cornyn, 25.7% to 21.7%, with Paxton again in the lead at 27% among likely Republican primary voters.

The RealClearPolitics polling aggregator shows Paxton in front with 29.8% of the potential primary vote, Cornyn close behind with 27.8% and Hunt in third place at 19.5%.

President Trump has not endorsed any of the three Republicans, though all have sought to claim the mantle of his Make America Great Again movement.***

If LBJ and John Connally had a child, it would be John Cornyn.

Ken Paxton has his own problems, (cough, cough) Laura Olson.

Accordingly, I will be voting early and often for Wesley Hunt.

The University of Houston poll actually showed Hunt doing the best of the 3 Republicans in November.

Hunt’s status with many GOP voters is basically: “He’s not John Cornyn and he’s not Ken Paxton and I don’t hate him because I know nothing about him.”

The November matchups in the U of H poll were way closer than they should be. Or probably will be — but that very much remains to be seen, even though either of the 2 Democrat idiots *should* lose handily to any Republican.

November polls are stale by now because negative advertising has begun.

The RAT crossover vote to save Cornyn is going to be strong.

No, they mean this November not last November.

Perhaps there will be less crossover for once, since Democrats have a contested primary too.

And if they don’t crossover in March they can’t participate in May either.

I think Cornyn is toast either way. I don’t see a lot of Rinos and Bush republicans voting for Paxton or Hunt so as long as their combined total exceeds Cornyn he’s out eventually. I’m really hoping Cornyn places 3rd which would be a shot across the bow to GOPe slime like Thune.

“ not Ken Paxton”

Why not? He’s the only elected official who does his job.

Because he has a weird marriage?

That’s just dumb..

Hunt will be at best as worthless as Cornyn; if you can’t vote for Paxton vote in the Dem primary.

Cornyn is running a lot of ads here in Texas saying that he is a stalwart Trump supporter. Either way, I have a feeling that his political career is over. Any of the candidates are markedly better than the Democrat candidates.

The rats have a competitive primary of their own. I doubt Cornyn can count on their votes.

Go ahead and call him a RINO, but I have a longtime friend that has been pretty involved in Texas politics for 30+ years and his 2 cents?

If not Cornyn, then Hunt. If Paxton, hope the Rats shoot themselves in the foot and pick the squadrian Crockett.

If Talerico vs Paxton? Disaster looms.

I’m not a Texan and it’s just one person’s second-hand opinion, but people need to step outside their bubble. Yeah, my friend is basically a suburban Dallas country clubber - played Brookhaven with him once...

But he’s a level-headed guy - even if the W-loving RINO people here hate (more’s the pity) and believes a Paxton vs Talerico race would be a monumental disaster for the GOP and Texas.

Saw an anti Paxton ad this morning. They called him “weird”. Why, because he has an artificial eye?
I will vote for Paxton, he does what needs to be done. The rhinos including Orr tried to get rid of him last year and failed.

Sadly, Texas is slowly turning into a blue state.(purple)

I wish Paxton would win outright but if I had free money I would bet on a Cornyn triumph I would not place money on Paxton, who I want to win.

It isn’t a conservative state anymore; Texas.

Dumb, but effective. This is how Bath house Barry got his first elected gig in Hellinois. His campaign trashed Jack Ryan for going to sex clubs.... with his wife.

Most certainly a better choice than Cornyn.
