AI fears spark sell-off in shipping, freight stocks in sign 'every corner of the market' is an AI target

Software stocks have been pummeled over artificial intelligence fears in recent weeks.

Now, investors can add logistics and freight names to the list of stocks getting sold on worries about AI.

Shares of logistics and freight operations companies C.H. Robinson (CHRW) and Universal Logistics (ULH) suffered double-digit losses on Thursday after a little-known Florida company announced a new tool that would scale freight volumes without increasing headcount.

...snip...

Nearly three-quarters of the companies that make up the S&P 500 flagged AI as a material risk in filings, up from just 12% in 2023, according to a study by the Conference Board conducted in October.

75% of the S&P 500 cites AI as a material risk in their mandatory reporting.

That's earth shattering news.

So AI is going to deliver cheap electronics from China without needing containers, ships, or cranes?

Explain “mandatory reporting”.

Thanks in advance!

AI will vastly underperform the expectations of both its proponents and those who fear its impact. Just IMHO, of course.

Publicly traded US corporations must file quarterly reports that list income/costs/profits and dozens of other metrics.

They also must publicly issue warnings in those reports if they see material risk on the horizon.

One can hope.

This could actually be a big issue. AI CAN crunch numbers faster than any human(s). However, AI can NOT lay concrete because there are too many variables which are UNPREDICTABLE that affect such work in order to have a perfect outcome (and even then, a perfect outcome is NOT attained).

AI can not fill portable propane bottles due to the immense number of variables which are UNPREDICTABLE by anyone and require a HUMAN brain to observe, think and provide a suitable outcome.

AI can not solve human issues regarding values because AI does not have a CONSISTENT value system or in many cases, no value system at all. Situational ethics is all it could possible do, which would lead to immense wrong-doing.

All of the people from the top to the bottom KNOW that AI can only do work that is predictable, has manageable variables and will never be able to be more complex than that BECAUSE humans wrote the programming. Only God can provide such phenomenal thinking and output achieved through knowledge that HE provides, not humans. A human with an appropriate value system can do FAR, FAR more than Artificial Intelligence.

Did you see the Super Bowl AI ad?

It showed an officer worker stressing over a large spreadsheet. AI hero shows up and runs it seconds.

The worker kicks up her feet and relaxes without giving a thought to how she is about to be replaced...permanently.

“never be able to be more complex than that BECAUSE humans wrote the programming”

AI is writing ever smarter and more capable versions of itself. That process is accelerating and it’s not linear.

For tasks that require knowledge and cognition, AI will take over. For tasks that require a physical skill, AI will design ever smarter and more capable robots.

For instance, robots can now frame a house. I have SEEN a robot that can prune grape vines perfectly, doing the work of more than a dozen men. They are specialized, not humanoid.

It might take a decade or so, but there will be robot crews that can lay PERFECT concrete. Hell, they may build entire subdivisions.

It will very soon devolve to the ultimate question: Are humans or robots cheaper? Because US corporations will choose cheaper every single time.

High schools keep pushing STEM curricula.

With AI, you are looking at wasted time, money, and effort.

All that study and training will be replaced by Skynet.
