Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said “there aren’t anywhere close to the votes” needed to change the Senate’s filibuster rule to allow Republican-sponsored legislation to reform voter registration requirements to pass the upper chamber with fewer than 60 votes.
Thune on Tuesday dismissed the idea that Republicans might lower the procedural threshold for advancing the House-passed SAVE Act, which would require people to show passports or birth certificates as proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
Thune said he supports passing federal law to require documented proof of citizenship when registering to vote, but he dismissed talk of changing the Senate rules to create a pathway to passing the legislation, which Democrats strongly oppose.
Thune pledged to protect the Senate’s filibuster rule, which requires 60 votes to advance legislation, when he ran for Senate majority leader in 2024.
He said his position is broadly supported within the Senate Republican Conference.
“It’s not just me not being willing to do it. There aren’t anywhere close to the votes, not even close, to nuking the filibuster,” he said of a proposal to lower the threshold for advancing legislation to a simple majority by voting along partisan lines to establish new precedent.

Will they force a standing filibuster (opposing cloture)?
They, meaning, the Pubbies not permitting the donkey party to simply declare a filibuster?
Somehow Harry Reid didn’t seem to have a problem with doing it.
Clearly a lot of racists have been elected to Congress; racist because these vile people truly believe that “black” and “other minorities are too stupid — or, just as likely, too lazy — to obtain an ID to vote.
Thune is a weak, jelly-spined RINO. Why do we always get these in leadership?
There is nothing more important that secure elections. Republicans should simply abolish the rule by simple vote.
Thune knows he could make it happen. It is he, that is keeping it from happening.
We always are sabotaged by the elitist GOP.
Meh.
The bill is poorly written anyway - I think a lot of people believe a “REAL ID” qualifies, but in fact, it doesn’t. It’s only EDLs — ironically, only currently issued in blue states (Minnesota, Vermont, New York, Washington and I think one other) that even currently have state issued IDs that require confirmation of citizenship.
Standard REAL IDs issued by the other ~45 states are available to both citizens *and* legal residents.
So - you’d generally need a passport.
You know who has passports?
Come on Johnny, force them through the filibuster process and then call for a vote.
For starters the article doesn’t name names. Then it switches to the filibuster rule. Even without the filibuster would we get 51? Doubt it. It’s naming names.
Then arms need to be twisted, out of their sockets if necessary.
We have to win this, and do what’s necessary to get it done.
Some won’t be happy with the Senate GOP. It’s not even close apparently.
Some?
What about YOU, RandyFan??? How happy/sad are you, over this?
Do tell.
Thune is the weak sister of Midge.
Thune not even trying. He’s the Deep State stopgap.
Republicans snatching defeat from their victories again. This legislation should have been brought forward and voted on last year.
Michigan is the other EDL I was missing.... Essentially, states bordering Canada — this was done decades ago by such states because an EDL confirming citizenship allows one to use it in Canada/cross into Canada as you can a passport.
I’ve got a commercial EDL, my passport was required to get it, because Washington State allows everyone to have a DL.
Washington is a blue state purely because of this, and mail in voting for decades.
That’s the real question. Can Thune force that all by himself, or do the Venezuela-bought RINO’s have to vote on that too?
Make them all vote. Put them on record.
Thune is just protecting his fellow Republicans.
He doesn’t have enough votes for a simple majority vote, much less enough to defeat a filibuster.
Keeping the 60 vote margin in play allows everyone to keep pretending. 🫤
Too many here still can’t come to grips with the uniparty. “Just one good election will fix it! Really!”
