A former Bothell City Council member, James McNeal, has been sentenced to 125 months in prison for the death of Liliya Guyvoronsky.
Court records indicate that McNeal initially called his attorney to report the crime in April 2024.
He was found at the scene covered in blood with self-inflicted wounds, and Guyvoronsky was found suffocated in a bedroom. Friends shared that McNeal and Guyvoronsky met at a strip club where she worked and had been dating on and off.
Though McNeal was initially charged with murder, he pleaded guilty to the less serious charges of manslaughter and assault in January. Although details of the plea deal were not disclosed during McNeal's sentencing hearing on Friday, his attorneys cited "evidentiary concerns" and noted the victim's family agreed to the resolution.
McNeal apologized for his actions in court, saying, "I’ve been filled with regret, remorse, shame every day, and will continue to struggle to comprehend the enormity for the rest of my life."
Friends of Guyvoronsky carried lilies to the sentencing hearing in her honor as they faced the man responsible for her death.
"You failed at being a human being when you took Lily’s life," Nicole Louise, a friend of Guyvoronsky, said as she addressed McNeal. "You wanted to win, but you lost. You are a threat to women, you are a threat to public safety, and you are a menace."
"Lily was my best friend and my soul sister," Madison Darner, another friend of the victim's, said. "She was resilient, determined, thoughtful, and curious. She had high hopes and big aspirations, her laughter filled rooms, her kindness extended to everyone around her."
Guyvoronsky's family also addressed McNeal in court, with her mother, Alena Guyvoronsky, saying, "I do not hate you, I do not hate you, James. I understand that you did not mean for this."
"This is not a story, a case, or a headline; it is our everyday reality," Alena Guyvoronsky noted. "It was the loss of a daughter, a family member, a future that was taken from us."
Friends of the victim told KOMO News that though they don't believe the sentence is nearly enough, they hope to instead redirect the focus on the need for resources for domestic violence victims.
"It doesn’t feel fair, I think I want to refocus attention to funding for domestic violence, accessing resources, and making those resources readily available," Louise said.
"Other women struggle; they face this every day, and there’s not enough knowledge or wisdom about situations like this and being able to know if Lily was standing here today, she would be educating everybody," Darner said.

Or, at least for the next four months and some change. Honestly, why even bother?
Was curious about the light sentence until I saw the photo of the killer.
I’m surprised the DA even prosecuted it.
What, no bears?
;-)
One down, millions to go.
May the woman be in Heaven.
Murderer should be quickly executed to protect the public.
He needs to be hung for mirder.
I don't follow. Article says 125 months, over 10 years.
Oops, I read it as “days.”
According to your table, there are as many dentists (60-65, all races) per 100,000 American persons as there are black murderers (64 per 100,000).
Let that sink in.
That isn't one age group, that's all of them, cradle to grave, considered as a whole.
Looks like it is a respectable occupation in that subpopulation.
This statistic initially is surprising, then, it really isn't, when you recall the news in your town or city in the past month.
As many dentists per capita in the whole US population as black murderers among them.
Downright respectable career for them, I guess.
But wait, there is more. If you look at the representation of dentists: 3.8 percent of dentists are black.
So someone in that ethnicity is 26 TIMES more likely to be a murderer than a dentist.
It's easy to extrapolate to the other professions, too.
Someone please point out where I am wrong.
Takehome message: Murder is just not that big of a deal for them. It's kind of expected, someone or more likely, some persons in the family-or-friend circle will be (a) murderer(s). And since usually that narrows down career choices, it's a semi-permanent decision.
So it is reasonable to conclude that in that sad subpopulation, murder is just not that big of a deal.
It is a common and semi-permanent career choice.
It doesn't involve being shunned or ostracised by the whole group, as far as anyone can tell.
When someone does the typical time for murder, it is 10.8-14.6-17.4 years of imprisonment, depending on the estimate. Definitely not 'life' as most people think.
So as far as that aforementioned group is concerned, murder seems to be really no big deal.
One more estimate, done by me, points out that there are about as many freed murderers out there, and possibly more, walking around as there are dentists (of all races).
So I guess we've been wrong all our lives. Murder is basically OK, it is a legitimate career choice, and lots of people among them are out there who are career murderers, free as birds. Walking around, accepted and liked by their peers. More murderers than dentists, engineers, accountants, and many other known professions.
And MANY TIMES more black murderers per capita than black professionals of the above categories.
He will be out in 6. Unless there’s another pandemic; he could be out in 2. Disgusting.

Yeah, that would be a laugh...😣
Still not enough though.
Nope. I was on a jury for a murder trial six years ago. The accused got sent away for sixty-five years, and is eligible for parole in 2065. That’s better.
