California attorney general has lashed out at what he says are are “baseless claims” from the Trump administration about widespread fraud in the state.
California has been a frequent target of the Trump administration’s fight against fraud. In recent weeks Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz has made claims about hospice care facilities allegedly draining billions in taxpayer dollars.
“Trump claims California is wasting money when in reality our programs are helping lower income individuals and lower income families get healthcare, food and housing assistance,” Attorney General Rob Bonta said on Thursday.
“Trump claims, wrongly, California is perpetuating fraud when we are the victim,” Bonta said.
The state’s top prosecutor highlighted his agency’s efforts to combat fraud over the years, which have resulted in the California Department of Justice recovering nearly $3 billion of taxpayer money from criminal and civil prosecutions.
When it comes to hospice fraud in the state, Bonta said his office is currently involved in two-dozen civil lawsuits and have brought criminal charges against 109 defendants.
“We know that when it comes to hospice fraud, the scale and complexity of this specific type of fraud has evolved over time, and we are appropriately prioritizing it and tackling it,” Bonta told reporters.
The attorney general called out Trump’s “outrageous” and “ridiculous” claims that California’s government is the one enabling fraud, and underscoring it’s not a blue vs red state problem.
“Do bad actors try to take advantage of California and impose fraud on California? They do, just like they do every other state,” Bonta said. “This idea that the government of California is involved in fraud is ridiculous but is also on brand with this president,” he said.

And several of them are actually American citizens.
CA wrote the book on government program fraud.
It’s institutionalized.
And most of it made de facto legal in the state.
As slick Willie says: deny, deny, deny.
Yup
Baghdad Bonta
The Manila Moron
Bonta is Newsom’s idiot lackey - he’s far too busy filing lawsuit after lawsuit against Trump to look for any fraud in California.
“Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed 54 lawsuits against the Trump administration as of January 20, 2026.”
Another way of saying, "They've got us fair and square".
“Hones in on...”???
Did they fire all the editors at the Post?
DELOITTE is the contractor in CA (and in GA, TX, FL, IL, PA, NY...and 25 states total) for Eligibility to Medicaid, CHPS, SNAP/EBT, WIC, TANF, Sec8 and other welfare programs.
DELOITTE is the source of more fraud than other single places.
When a provider bills for dead people it is because DELOITTE lists known dead as living, active welfare members.
When a provider double bills for Sue Smith, Susan Smith, Susan Jones-Smith who have 3 distinct ID but the same DOB, SSN and address it is because DELOITTE lists them with separate ID.
Exactly the response you would expect from a corrupt AG not doing his job because of politics.
