MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In some ways, 10-year-old Giancarlo is one of the lucky ones. He still goes to school.
Each morning, he and his family bundle up and leave their Minneapolis apartment to wait for his bus. His little brother hefts on his backpack, even though he stopped going to day care weeks ago because his mom is too afraid to take him.
As they wait behind a wrought-iron fence, Giancarlo’s mother pulls the boys into the shadow of a tree to pray. It’s the only time she stops scanning the street for immigration agents.
“God, please protect my son when he’s not at home,” she says in Spanish. She spoke with The Associated Press on condition of partial anonymity for the family, because she fears being targeted by immigration authorities.
For many immigrant families in Minnesota, sending a child to school requires faith that federal immigration officers deployed around the state won’t detain them. Thousands of children are staying home, often for lack of door-to-door transportation — or simply trust.
The fear has turned into reality.

Anyone know if the Feds offer to pay for relocation back to home country? Will the Feds offer to send the folks home free of charge?
Risk vs reward. We have laws that must be obeyed.
If you are here illegally you get deported. End of story.
Was little Giancarlo born here? If so, they won’t be taking him. But he’ll make good bait with which to catch his parents! Not fair, you say? I agree in principle, but in practice, it works. And sticking with what works leads to success.
Mizz Vazquez-Tonnes is welcome to fund sponsorship for as many immigrants as she likes. Since we are supposed to feel guilty for not allowing the entire 3rd world into our society surely she is willing to pony up. This is unless she is a vile leftist propagandist.
Don’t care.
Can’t make me care.

If the immigrants are here legally, they should be fine.
The breathless drama in these stories makes me shake my head.
Struggle Sessions are not too far away in Minnesota’s future.
Total BS, if they are here illegally they have no business being in an American school. It is not an act of faith, it is theft, in that they are stealing resources via taxes meant for American citizens.
That is a sore point with me. Since Mexico enabled their entry by permitting transit through their country, dump them back in Mexico. Let Mexico pay for their repatriation.
Right? I would use him as bait. I hope ICE is paying attention.
>>One mother, an immigrant from Mexico, has given up her housecleaning job, and her husband stopped going to his construction job to minimize their chances of being detained.
*LEGAL* immigrants don’t have that stress. From the article, it sounds like ICE should be searching school truancy records to help locate illegals.
But many of them ARE American citizens, being born here. Our own laws are to blame for that. It creates "anchor babies", and it needs to be fixed.
Walking the streets and riding public transportation in these blue 3rd world $shithole cities is an act of faith for the rest of us.
Weapons grade empathy.
“if they are here illegally they have no business being in an American school”
Actually Plyler v. Doe says they do.
Isn’t that special? The SUPREME (say it loud) COURT lectures us that since they are PERSONS, we MUST pay for their “education” (=babysitting) no matter how they “arrived” here.
We got rid of Roe at least at the federal level. Trump may overturn Wong Kim Ark. But we really, really need to dump Plyler.
Thank Tim Waz and Jacob Frey for that, lady. If they allowed the police to notify ICE of illegals who are in jail for other crimes and allow ICE to take them away, ICE wouldn't be on the streets in this woman's neighborhood. Unless, of course, she lives in a high crime area.
The Trump administration was offering several thousand dollars to people who would self-deport, but I don’t know if that program is still active.
The problem with using the word “immigrant” as this article does, is they never qualify the word at all with the all important words — LEGAL or ILLEGAL.
If you’re illegal, you should go home and apply to come here the LEGAL WAY like millions of others, and of course you should worry about ICE.
If you’re legal, there’s nothing to worry about.
There is a self-deportation program that pays $1,000 to anyone who self-deports.
What I didn’t see in this hit piece was whether or not the parents of little Giancarlo are here legally or not.
