A popular honeymoon destination is the site of the Pacific’s fastest-growing HIV epidemic, with officials pointing to rising meth use as a key driver.

In Fiji, HIV/AIDS cases are projected to double this year to more than 3,000, according to UNAIDS and Fiji’s Ministry of Health.

Officials say drug use is fueling the surge across the Pacific island nation. In December, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a rapid assessment detecting unsafe injecting practices.

The NYPost article inadvertently dropped a clue: “Maybe you just happen to walk by him … and [he] think[s] you’re after him. Especially if they cannot control their impulses, they become aggressive,” the informant added.”

It appears from the article that the contagion is among local drug addicts, and that it has no particular connection to Fiji’s status as a destination for honeymooners or any other tourists.

It’s hard to tell, but it isn’t interesting how drugs “travel” from region to region. It seems like “meth” was a high problem in the U.S. in the 1990’s and 2000’, but in the 2010’s meth receded, and opioids became the big problem. I could be wrong, but that’s what it seemed like. And there was a middle period where bath salts, flakka and stuff like that was prevalent, but you don’t hear as much about that anymore.

Yes, it is interesting, and I don’t know what combination of legal, financial, cultural, etc., factors have resulted in meth’s being today’s problem in Fiji.

Fiji was popular with Cannibals.
I met a descendant of Rev Baker, who went to spread the faith to Fiji and was killed and eaten.
All left of him were his shoes, which were too tough to eat even for the sturdy cannibals.
Maybe spread of diseases are related to the cannibalism?
