House narrowly approves $1.2T funding deal to end government shutdown
The New York Post ^ | 02/03/2026 | Ryan King

The House of Representatives passed a $1.2 trillion funding deal to end the four-day partial government shutdown Tuesday, sending it to President Trump’s desk for his expected signature.

Lawmakers voted 217-214 to pass the compromise funding package, which cleared the Senate late Friday and keeps about 97% of the government operating through Sept. 30.

Now Congress faces a 10-day scramble to negotiate a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security before its key agencies run out of cash Feb. 13, a timeline Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) described as “an impossibility.” *** The GOP holdouts were mainly miffed by the funding package not including the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote. While the SAVE Act has already passed the House, Senate Democrats have been able to block it via the 60-vote filibuster.

Multiple House Republicans wanted the SAVE Act either included in the funding deal — forcing a Senate vote that will likely fail and prolong the partial shutdown — or assurances from Thune that he would find a workaround to pass it.

Trump on Monday demanded House Republicans send the funding package to him without making any changes, wanting to keep the government shutdown as short as possible.

*** Senate Democrats demanded reforms to immigration enforcement following the Jan. 24 shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. *** That led to the current $1.2 trillion funding deal, which includes five appropriations bills and a two-week spending patch to keep DHS afloat while negotiations play out on the Democrats’ demands.

Trump supported the bill.

The Senate rejected an amendment Friday that would strip $5.1 billion in refugee welfare spending out of a government funding package in a vote of 32-67.

Some GOP senators likely voted against the measure over concerns that partisan amendments could ultimately derail the funding package. President Donald Trump also urged the Senate to approve the funding package containing the refugee assistance money.

“Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Thursday offering his praise of the bipartisan deal.

Welfare for illegals. Money for every foreigner that wants it. No voter integrity law. Remind me again why it’s so critical we vote GOP at the midterm?

There isn’t a reason. It’s all theatre and our President is going to sign it. Next up is funding for DHS which won’t get passed a Senate filibuster. But but they are funded through blah blah blah. Why then are they voting on funding?

SAVE is being handled separately, as I understand it.

Really? Twist yourself into a pretzel then and explain why this bill is so magnificent and the signing of it even better and when the “fight” is to begin.

Abolish the filibuster! The Dems will do it as soon as they regain power.

The sad truth is that the SAVE Act isn't going to work, anyway. Blue states will continue to cheat however they want, then bog any charges down in court with favorable rulings from friendly Leftist Federal judges.

Without a corrupt judiciary, the SAVE Act would not be necessary - with it the SAVE Act can't have any real effect.

No, they have definitely had some fight in them for “We the People.”
Once upon a time, Trump wasn’t concerned about bad polling when a fight was needed for us.
