There’s a concerning new trend among burglars in the Bay Area, authorities say.
Burglars are hiding surveillance devices like cameras at homes to monitor their potential victims, the San Jose Police Department announced Friday.
“The suspects plant hidden surveillance devices, often posing as delivery service providers, to determine when homes are unoccupied before committing burglaries,” SJPD said. “As a reminder, remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity helps keep our neighborhoods safe.”
Helicopters to fly at low altitudes around Bay Area ahead of Super Bowl LX, officials warn A resident in east San Jose called police Thursday after they allegedly found a hidden camera on their property at 2:44 a.m. Officers seized the camera, which had its own power supply and was positioned to face the home. No suspects have been arrested in the case.

Hidden surveillance devices were recently found at a home in San Jose. The equipment is likely used by burglars to monitor their potential victims, SJPD said. “It is believed the camera was used to monitor the occupants of the residence in preparation for a burglary or other criminal activity,” SJPD said.
SJPD Burglary Unit detectives found a second camouflaged device close to where the first camera was found. The second piece of equipment found is thought to be a Wi-Fi-powered device.
Police are warning Bay Area residents about the new burglary trend.
“SJPD has received several reports of deceptive tactics used to case unoccupied homes,” SJPD said. “The suspects plant hidden surveillance devices, often posing as delivery service providers, to determine when homes are unoccupied before committing burglaries. As a reminder, remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity helps keep our neighborhoods safe.”
SJPD issued the following list of tips to avoid falling victim to this surveillance: What to watch out for:
Small or concealed cameras placed near homes to monitor activity
Individuals ringing doorbells or posing as delivery drivers to see if anyone answers
Packages left at doors to test whether a home is vacant
Unfamiliar vehicles or people repeatedly passing by a residence
What you should do:
Do not touch suspicious devices if possible
Be cautious of unexpected visitors or deliveries
Check your property regularly for unfamiliar devices or objects
Retrieve packages promptly or ask a neighbor to help when you’re away
Use outdoor lighting, doorbell cameras, or alarm systems when possible
Report any suspicious activity or objects immediately to the San José Police Department Emergency: Call 911
Non-Emergency: (408) 277-8900

Preferably at the homes with the “Hate Has No Home Here” signs.
What? I guess the alternative is to put a picture of Phyllis Diller in front of the camera so that's all they see.
Do you see the irony here?
The criminals have armed themselves with high tech devices which may have been developed and marketed by the folk they are robbing?
Game cameras? Phone accessed?
This isn’t a new thing.
I saw a story about this four or five years ago. Might have started before that.

May be not well publicized but definitely not new.
