House Republicans propose stricter voting requirements as Trump administration eyes the midterms

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are proposing sweeping changes to the nation’s voting laws, a long-shot priority for President Donald Trump that would impose stricter requirements before Americans vote in the midterm elections in the fall.

The package expected to be released Thursday reflects some of the party’s most sought-after election changes, including requirements for photo IDs before people can vote, proof of citizenship and prohibitions on universal vote-by-mail and ranked choice voting — two voting methods that have proved popular in some states.

The legislation faces a long road ahead in the narrowly-split Congress, where Democrats have rejected similar ideas as disenfranchising Americans’ ability to vote with onerous registration and ID requirements.

Republicans are calling their new legislation the “Make Elections Great Again Act” and say their proposal should provide the minimum standard for elections for federal offices.

If republicans cannot get this passed and signed into law, they are completely useless.

Well just brace yourself for a shock, because they probably won’t get it done.

But why should this even be news? Why is it so unique to have voter ID so that only citizens vote? But that’s where we’re at now in this country.

“... including requirements for photo IDs before people can vote, proof of citizenship, and prohibitions on universal vote-by-mail and ranked choice voting ...”

Most excellent ... if our spineless Rs can make the law of the land.

This law is obviously way overdue. But the problem will be in the Senate. The Democrats will threaten a filibuster. Then the Republicans will just roll over. And so the proposed law will die.

Oh, but just you wait. If and when the Democrats take back the Senate, they will remove the filibuster. Those folks are serious about their agenda.

There is a limitation on what the federal government can do in regards to voting.

The Founding Fathers limited this on purpose because the last thing we want is for voting to be nationalized.

We are saved by having this kept out of federal hands. It is to our benefit that generally they keep their noses out.

They’re already completely useless.

The question is what to do about it.

On the other hand, back in those days everyone knew you at your polling place. Today hundreds of people are standing in line. Plus there are those sacks and sacks of questionable mail-in ballots.

A national voter ID law is now necessary. That might take a constitutional amendment.

It’s all just a theoretical discussion anyway. The Democrats will never let it happen.
🙁

OK, consider all the illegal voting going on. You can’t possibly think that the founders wanted this. I would prefer our voting to be in Federal hands than Foreign hands.

The country needs this but the Senate will never pass it because of the filibuster.

There isn’t enough quantity of illegal voting enough to ever justify nationalization.

This is a classic case of either throwing out the baby with the bath water, or cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Its probably both. It’s throwing the baby out while having no nose.

Domestic enemies: Democrats/RINO’s/Elite Republicans.

You are so right. States should control voting. Currently FEC/HAVA have too much influence and have been the problem. Changes at the USPS make date of mail impossible to have mail-in ballots in most cases.

MAGA needs to get states to do things right. EG
In GA race for Secretary of State Kelvin King is clearly the good guy. Gabe Sterling is clearly the bad guy. Vernon Jones is a nice guy who might split the vote of the good voters.

Congress has little play in reality.

Actually, I just had a thought. The Dems are as disgusted with their party as we are with ours. How about a national movement to vote only for independents? (Then, of course, we’d have to make sure we had plenty of good independents running.)

Yeah. The scary thing is that everybody’s going to cry out for voting to be nationalized, and then the democrats are going to win some future election, and then they’ll blame someone else for why voting was nationalized.

No. The feds should never have our voting.

From my cold dead hands.

Sorry but once the Dems passed the motor voter registration nonsense coupled with Democrats letting illegals get drivers licenses in blue states, any control of who voted was lost.
