Guarantees to Kiev Would Mean US Involvement in Potential New Conflict — Rubio
TASS ^ | 1/28/26

Marco Rubio also criticized the military potential of the US's European NATO allies, namely its erosion

WASHINGTON, January 28. /TASS/. Security guarantees to Kiev would mean the direct involvement of the United States and the West as a whole in a new conflict in Ukraine if one were to start, US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio said.

"But every notion of security guarantees that's been talked about and that the Europeans have pushed is one that requires a strong commitment by the United States as a backstop, which you know, in essence, means we would be committed potentially in a conflict, in a future conflict," Rubio stressed.

"That's something that I think needs to be understood in the context of what I've just described as the problems with [Europe's] NATO capabilities," he stated at a US Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting. He repeatedly criticized the military potential of the US's European NATO allies, namely its erosion. US President Donald Trump demands that Europe increase military spending and capabilities, Rubio noted.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West that any foreign military contingents in Ukraine will be considered legitimate targets for the Russian army, and the deployment of Western military personnel in Ukraine "under any guise and in any format" is unacceptable for Russia.

Zelensky’s string pullers have him demand that which they know he won’t get.

How is it in the interest of the USA to gie these guarantees?

We could choose not to.

Those guarantees are certainly contrary to US interests.

Georgia Meloni, who otherwise strongly supports Ukraine in the conflict, has said that she will not commit Italian troops to defend Ukraine following a ceasefire or peace deal. Good for her and good for Italy (not that Italian troops have done much good in previous wars, but the sentiment is correct). The US should follow suit and say that despite our moral support, we’re not going to send troops to defend Ukraine or police a DMZ. Let the Ukrainians do that with whatever money and arms the EU will give them.

...................”We could choose not to.”

I already chose not to. Follow me.
And that’s how ridiculous this whole Ukraine thing seems to me.

What’s the point of this money going out the door?

Given the repeated attempts by Zelensky and the EU to keep the war alive and to draw the US into the conflict, it would be a huge mistake to obligate US military to intervene in any future Ukrainian conflict

Ukraine should not expect more than money and the right to buy listed arms (subject to EU approval).

The deaths of two leftist agitators have the GOPe ready to throw Noem to the Democratic wolves.

Ukraine at least has brave men.

“What’s the point of this money going out the door?”

Six billion dollars plus six billion Euros yearly to keep the Russian bear at bay would be a cheap price to pay compared to the $1 trillion annually paid for US defense.

From what I've read, any guarantee is conditional on Ukraine first pulling out of the part of Donetsk they still hold, which is heavily fortified.

I think they will refuse, as right now they are fighting the Russians to a standstill and supposedly preparing an offensive operation as the Russians have exhausted their reserves in several areas. Putin's supposed recent "flexibility" is probably due to that and is probably just a stalling tactic.

In addition, they have to view any US guarantee without troops with extreme skepticism, as Trump could always find some excuse to do nothing in case of renewed hostilities.

My prediction is more stalling by both sides to see what happens on the battlefield, so Witkof and Kushner are simply racking up the frequent flyer miles for nothing.

I believe that's the proportion of the population that claimed to be Ukrainian according to the 1959 census.

Be aware that some pro-RF people might not choose to stick around in areas held by Ukrainian armed forces.

True. When I was young and stupid enough to box, it was readily apparent that the people you didn't want to fight were those from difficult backgrounds who weren't 'comfortable' in life and felt they had nothing to lose. That is not the Europeans. They are delusional in their normalcy bias, and don't realize that in seeking to protect their comfort zones they are putting their futures (and those of future generations) at enormous risk.
