As the Liberal government finally rolls out its long-awaited “gun buyback,” the program is running headlong into the near-unprecedented situation of a majority of Canadian governments and police agencies vowing to ignore or defy it.
Over the weekend, Yukon and the Northwest Territories confirmed that they would have nothing to do with a federal program to remove “assault-style” firearms from private ownership.
The two territories join Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as an ever-growing list of police departments and police unions saying the program isn’t worth their time.
Last week, the head of the New Brunswick Chiefs of Police Association publicly told legal gun owners that if they didn’t comply with the program, the province’s various law enforcement agencies wouldn’t care.
“We’re not going looking for you,” said Robert Bruce, whose day job is the chief of the Saint John Police.

Most cops like guns.
The use the phrase “gun buyback” to pretend that all firearms rightfully belong to government.
Good. Every inch lost is an inch lost forever.
These programs are at best waste of taxpayers money.
People turn in only the guns they want to get rid of.
Preferably broken.
In case of anonymous buybacks, these programs turned out to be very useful to criminals trying to get rid of the evidence!
That’s what I did. An old inoperable pistol and a cheap old shotgun netted me $300 from the City of Baltimore. Like most of the guys in line, I was buying ammo with the money.
Great deal!
It is actually kind of hard to get rid of bad gun.
Somebody can find it in garbage and fix it just enough to murder somebody!
You pretty much need to find and pay somebody to destroy it safely. I am not even sure, what is the proper procedure?
So gun buyback is the very best way to get rid of it.
You are guaranteed the gun is going to be destroyed, and, you get even some money for it!
I guess it’s OK to defy the law when you disagree with the law ...
In sane states that don’t violate the Constitution by “registering” weapons ... all you have to do is destroy it.
BUT
That means destroying the frame or receiver. Cutting the barrel ... particularly on a rifle or shotgun ... could be a violation of the (unconstitutional) National Firearms act. Cutting a rifle or shotgun barrel in half almost certainly will make a “short barreled rifle” or a “short barreled shotgun” both of which devices are (unconstitutionally) restricted by the NFA.
If the above paragraph doesn’t mean anything to you, ask for help from someone who knows about guns before attempting to destroy one.
Yes,
They can be destroyed, but it is hard work, you can inadvertently violate some law, as you mentioned, and somebody can read and adopt the serial number for his own criminal gun if you do not destroy it properly (but then you can get in trouble for destroying serial number!).
It is possible, but rather hard and scary.
Why not turn it in and get $$$ for it?
“Its OK to defy the law”
Yeh when its a god given right.
Why not sell it to a bunch of politically motivated communist @$$holes?
Mainly because I don’t want to give them the satisfaction or the appearance of legitimacy.
Also, I know how to disassemble it, destroy the appropriate parts first using a bandsaw, then scatter the debris.
Yeah ... and who gets to define that?
Your choice!
But it looks quite cumbersome!
Why not take advantage of those idiots?
Just use a cutting torch and slag the whole weapon down, seems pretty easy to me.
That works ... in fact, it’s what governments do to demilitarize a receiver or other part they don’t want supposedly free Citizens to have. You probably know about “re-welded” receivers ...
In any case, I don’t have a cutting torch. I do have a bandsaw ...
God! 😉
LOL!
Of course ...
I look forward to Him coming down and setting our various governments straight ... with a rod of iron, if necessary.
Until then, it can be a rather arguable point.
There’s nothing to argue about. You have the god given right to protect yourself, your family and your possessions. That right does not come from government.
So you say ... and I agree. As you might guess from my tagline, I'm an absolutist on the matter. Everything from sticks and stones to nukes, phasers, and proton torpedoes.
Now, try to convince the government ... at any level ...
Most of those slugs disagree ...
And so the matter is argued.
