Gavin Newsom’s ballyhooed 'care first' $236 million mental health push helps ONLY 22 people in four years
Daily Mail ^ | 01/27/2026 | Dana Kennedy

When Gavin Newsom launched CARE Court with great fanfare, he promised help for people with severe mental illness who go back and forth between homelessness, jail, and emergency rooms.

The California Governor boasted that CARE Court would be a 'completely new paradigm' that would compassionately force people's mentally ill loved ones off the streets and into treatment via a judge's order – and estimated that up to 12,000 people could be helped.

A State Assembly analysis said up to 50,000 people might be eligible.

However after spending $236 million in taxpayer dollars on CARE Court since the March 2022 announcement, the Daily Mail can reveal that the program has flopped, with some critics even saying it's fraud.

Only 22 people have been court-ordered into treatment so far.

*** Out of roughly 3000 petitions filed by October statewide, 706 were approved but of those, 684 were voluntary agreements that were never the intended point of the program.

*** California's homeless population has hovered between 170,000 and 180,000 in recent years.

Between 30 and 60 percent of them are thought to have serious mental illness and many of those have substance abuse issues, according to both state and federal data.

*** California has spent between $24 and $37 billion on the homelessness problem since Governor Newsom took office in 2019 with dubious results although the governor's office frequently cites recent preliminary stats from 2025 showing a nine percent decrease in what is called unsheltered homelessness.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

If Newsom becomes president, I’m going to take John Prine’s advice

"Blow up your TV
Throw away your paper
Go to the country
Build you a home
Plant a little garden
Eat a lot of peaches
Try an' find Jesus on your own"

Well, it depends on the meaning of the word “helps.” If we’re talking about paying bureaucrat salaries, making friendly non-profit CEOs rich and funneling the money back into Dem campaign coffers, the program helped a lot of people.

Let’s see...The “best” person the Democrats could find in their millions of supporters for President in 2025 was Kamala Harris. The best person they could find for the Vice President of the Democrat Party was David Hogg. Now, the best they can find for 2028 is either AOC or Newsom.

Methinks the powers that be in the Democrat party needs a brain transfusion.

You can find more than 22 candidates for immediate mental health right now, on or near Market Street in downtown San Francisco. Just scoop them up like trout. Those living outside usually also have addiction problems too, but they are present, if someone seriously wants to help them.

My heart goes out to them. I know a former co-worker who is homeless right now and just got fired. He has burnt his bridges with his co-workers. We needed him gone due to unhinged behavior and random aggression. I had to stop ‘helping’ him.

The Democrats have a distinct advantage in voter fraud, corrupt courts, and in the MSM.

I used to think that virtue signaling was a pastime of harmless fools, but it’s become an industry of unimaginable theft.

“Gavin Newsom’s ballyhooed ‘care first’ $236 million mental health push helps ONLY 22 people in four years...”

Don’t laugh too hard. Those 22 people can mean over a hundred votes if they can sneak into enough poles and get enough addition ballots to send in by mail. And they have an excuse built into the error if they get caught. The people were insane.

They are using their recourses for investment.

“ I had to stop ‘helping’ him.”

One of the hardest lesson I’ve learned in my life is that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help.

You just need to walk away.

Sick. How do you humanely shock someone’s brains out? Humane mental hospitals are a myth. Drugs, shock and brain operations. The only difference between mental hospitals today and Bedlam is cleaner sheets.
