In the One Big Beautiful Bill passed in 2025, the National Firearms Act (NFA) tax for silencers/suppressors, short barreled rifles (SBR), short barreled shotguns (SBS), and any other weapons (AOW) was reduced from $200 (or $5 for AOW) to $0. The elimination of the tax took effect on January 1, 2026.
There is quite a bit of chatter on the Internet about the experience of submitting applications and the responses from the ATF computer system. There are reports of forms being approved in hours or days. Many are reporting the ATF 2026 control numbers on their applications. Exactly what those control numbers mean is not certain. Some state they started on October 1, 2025 (the start of the fiscal year), and they were in the low 300,000 range on January 1, 2026. One reasonable assumption is that they represent the number of applications submitted so far in 2026.

According to AR15.com, there are reports that ATF 2026 control numbers have exceeded 1,080,000 as of 11 P.M. on January 8th. Another poster mentioned a control number he received on January 7 was over 897,000. Some are control numbers 1,300,000 plus as of late January 10, 2026. The implication is that over 100,000 applications are being received per day for the first ten days. The implication and the assumption are incorrect.

The Trump administration has already filed amicus briefs that silencers fall under the protection of the Second Amendment.
GREAT! Arms. These days you need more than 2.
Suppressors aren't the panacea people think.
Europe allows silencers. It helps with noise and hearing loss. Some ranges there require one.
I wouldn’t mind getting a short barrel upper for my AR.

Domestically, outside of collecting taxers and interstate commerce the federal government has no constitutional authority to enforce laws. Since the tax provision was removed they have no authority to mandate that people get permission to receive firearms or to keep a registry of people who do.
There are more than one court challenges contending exactly your point.
No tax, no legitimacy of the law.
I seem to recall the same point being made about Obamacare once the individual mandate penalty got the kibosh but I don't recall why it didn't get any traction.
That's like saying "I don't wear seatbelts because people wearing seatbelts still die in car crashes." Swoft thinkin' Sparky!
For suppressors you want a large caliber, slow moving (subsonic) round. Yes, you can shoot supersonic rounds of out a suppressed gun, but you still get the supersonic crack once it leave the barrel.
I have a 300 blackout AR, a 300 blackout bolt action. They are hearing safe and sound about like a quieter version of a nail gun. You also have to get the right can for the right caliber. Use subsonic ammo for quietness.
I also have a 9mm pistol, and with subsonic rounds it’s pretty quiet, too. (hearing safe).
on a 45 ACP, putting a can on just makes it a bit less barkey at the range. 556 supersonic with a suppressor has a lot of that .22 style “crack” report when it exits the barrel.
So yes, not a panacea, but please tell me, is there ANYTHING in shooting sports that IS a panacea?
Yours is the fallacy of a false dichotomy. Lemme guess. You’re a product of public education? Dropped out? Figures.
