If you think Europe could defend itself, 'keep on dreaming,' Nato's Rutte tells EU lawmakers Rutte also tells EU lawmakers that if they think the EU or Europe as whole can defend itself without the US, they should “keep on dreaming”.
He says Europe’s defence spending would then have to go massively up to 10%, with further need to buy own nuclear capability and spend “billions and billions of euros.”
He also says Europe needs the US and similarly the US needs Nato.
He adds that even as US priorities evolve, there will “always be a very strong conventional US presence in Europe.”

It’s time to play hardball with our European “allies”.
Reduce our contribution to the NATO and UN budgets. Move part of our Frankfurt area military assets to Hungary.
During the Billy Jeff Clinton Bosnia conflict, I read that about 70% of the NATO “military” were from the USA forces.
“You *want* us on that wall, you *need* us on that wall!”
Europe doesn’t face a real threat from any foreign nation
Its enemies are 100% within.
Europeans should always keep that in mind. So should Canadians.
But, but Petteri Orpo PF of Finland said jsut last week at Davos that Europe was perfectly capable of defending inteself without ANY US help.
Spending will not get the Eruoweenies to man up any more than throwing money at education will make children learn.
Will it be the USA once more who will be again serving His Will?
He might be the only one over there speaking the truth.
Same with China. Other Asian countries cannot come together on their own.
Several orders of magnitude wrong.
Many many TRILLIONS.
You ungrateful bustards.
What’s with The Guardian’s “as it happened” bit in the headline? Are they suggesting that Europe somehow did defend itself without American help? I’m not seeing their point
I’m sure Hungarians would love the jobs a base would bring. Their salaries are shockingly low, Americans could pay them descent wages.
My friends who have gone back there recently say people seem so tense…prices have gone through the roof but wages have not. It used to not be like that.
Unnecessary edition to explain they are reporting on what he said “as it happened.”
Rather than re-arm, they should consider paying us tribute. Say, 5 percent of GDP.
He lost me at the part about the US needing NATO...
Perhaps Mr. Rutte could explain that to CA Gov. Gavin Newscum
who thinks the EU and NATO should tell PDJT to pound sand.
Then again, why bother conversing with a yapping chihuahua? :)
The US wants and should want Europe to take primary responsibility for Europe. We, the US, have a variety of other responsibilities (e.g., the Americas, the Middle East and East Asia). With regard to Europe, we provide capabilities that it would be wasteful for the Europeans to replicate. Among these are our nuclear umbrella, intelligence and logistics. Europe needs to get to 2 percent, make-up past for deficiencies, and toughen up its population. Were Europe to do these things, NATO would be strengthened and we would benefit by being to focus on other regions.
I think it might be more correct to say the US needs some European bases and overflight rights. Which is true - that's a damned long flight from the MidEast to the US. That is not quite the same as 'we need NATO' though.
