China’s top general has been accused of leaking nuclear secrets to the US and accepting bribes as President Xi Jinping purges the country’s senior military leadership.

General Zhang Youxia, 75, once considered one of Xi’s most-trusted military allies, allegedly leaked core technical data on China’s nuclear weapons to the US, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Zhang, the first-ranked vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, was officially placed under investigation on Saturday. He was detained by military corruption investigators earlier this week, according to reports from Chinese outlets.

What in the world kind of payoff could possibly turn a top Chinese general? I’d guess it was blackmail rather than bribery, perhaps the CIA learned something “interesting” about the general that he didn’t want spread around.

Or this is just an accusation made by the government, to purge someone they don’t want there.

If true, I hope we got some good intel from him considering the breadth of ChiCom espionage in the educational and commercial realm allowed to be perpetrated against the US for far too long.

It started with Clinton / Gore & Loral and all subsequent administration's ALLOWED the ChiComs to rip us off without repercussions.

I’m sure it didn’t start there. After all, the USSR knew about and stole from our nuclear program, before VP Truman even knew it existed, which was three weeks after he became president.

Ok so I don’t want to disagree with you, but I mean with regard to China the “no controlling legal authority” really started the bull run of ChiCom infiltration against US tech. Loral opened Pandoras box because prior the ChiComs did not really have controllable rockets and now they have a space station and are challenging us for the moon. Your Soviet precedent notwithstanding,

That’s certainly a well-used page in the playbook.

A shooting reportedly occurred between troops loyal to Zhang and the presidential security detail, resulting in several of Xi Jinping’s guards being wounded or killed

According to sources cited by Reuters and Bloomberg, reports are circulating that an attempted military coup took place in China aimed at overthrowing Xi Jinping. Two key generals have reportedly been detained, along with their families and up to 3,000 military personnel.

It’s not necessarily learning an advancement from them ; it’s learning how their program is set up, the numbers, the procedure, etc.

Yea, it’s weird how that happens over the course of history. Before the digital age it was spies & traitors and now it’s breaches and hackers. The Rosenbergs were the last traitors executed in 1953 and prior to that it was John Brown in 1859, almost 100 years prior. The FedGov has not been strict enough with the death penalty for traitorous douches. If our FedGov had held traitors responsible to a good degree, then Jonathan Pollard would be dead instead of running for office in Israel.

My guess is that he was becoming “politically unreliable”, i.e. he was thinking of supporting somebody other than XI as party srcretary.

Ted Hall was never even prosecuted. Klaus Fuchs was jailed for nine years.

The CIA doesn’t want to find new things China’s nuclear weaponry, they just want to know how obsolete it is.
