Pork processor Smithfield Foods said Wednesday it is gobbling up iconic hot-dog brand Nathan’s Famous in a $450 million deal.
Smithfield – a Chinese-owned food processor based in Virginia – will pay $102 a share to add the century-old brand to its portfolio, a nearly 10% premium on Nathan’s close on Tuesday.
Smithfield has held an exclusive license to manufacture and sell Nathan’s Famous products, including its hot dogs, sausages and corned beef, in the US and Canada and at Sam’s Club stores in Mexico since 2014. That license had been set to expire in 2032.
Nathan’s Famous is known for its annual hot dog-eating contest held at its Coney Island location on the Fourth of July each year. Winners – like repeat champion Joey Chestnut, who’s won a record-breaking 17 times – are awarded a “mustard belt” for eating the most hot dogs.
Nathan’s was started in 1916 by immigrant Nathan Handwerker, who borrowed $300 from entertainers Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor to open a hot dog stand. Nathan’s hot dogs initially sold for just 5 cents apiece.

Imho, China owned businesses in the US should be illegal.
It should be illegal for them to own land, too.
Smithfield bacon sucks
Where is Jasmine Crockett on this? She’s my favorite democrat. Her democrat primary debate with that choir boy will be on KXAN.com at noon. Don’t know if it’s CST. Might be entertaining.
Crap. There goes another hot dog brand.
Yep. Chinese owned Smithfield also bought up Farmer John’s in California - maker of the local favorite Dodger Dogs.
They closed the plant in 2023 saying the “couldn’t do business in California.”
“The closure was announced in June 2022, citing escalating costs of doing business in California, including significantly higher utility expenses (water, electricity, natural gas), taxes, transportation, and labor costs. Smithfield stated that utility costs in California were three and a half times higher per head compared to its other facilities.”
1,900 people lose their jobs. Just one of many, many business closures in California - while Gavin Newsom flies off to Davos to lecture world leaders on how things ought to be run.
American tradition? Only in the mind of their marketing people.
You want a good American hot dog? Hebrew National is the way to go. But even Oscar Meyer beats Nathan's if you must have an un-kosher one.
The Chinese are welcome to it.
I like Oscar Meyer and Hebrew National. The only ones I’ll buy.
Probably more Chinese money going to elite US universities than private business purchases.
Finally, I can get real dog meat in my hot dogs. They will become Obama’s favorite brand.
We truly have a death wish in this country for our security and culture. The fact that this happened under Trump’s time in office is even more depressing.
New Nathan’s Famous #1 Best Lucky Hot Dogs
I buy nothing Smithfield any more, Smithfield Restaurants should be boycotted.
The Chicoms own SMITHFIELD?
Now Nathan’s hot dogs?
Other China owned food brands:
Carando: a meat and sausage brand
Cook’s: a ham brand
Curly’s: a bacon and sausage brand
Eckrich: a sausage and meat brand
Farmland: a meat and sausage brand
Gwaltney: a pork and sausage brand
John Morrell: a meat and sausage brand
Krakus: a sausage brand
Margherita: a meat and sausage brand
Prime Fresh: Delicatessen Lunchmeats
They already own several GOVERNORS... what STATE will they own next?
We go with Hebrew National and Oscar Meyer too, though the HN seven-per-package thing is a little annoying.
I’m picky about hot dogs. Those and hamburgers are the only beef I eat...
