What is the Donbas, the piece of Ukrainian land that Putin wants so badly?

The United States, Russia and Ukraine rarely agree on anything. But as their delegations meet in Abu Dhabi for their first trilateral meeting since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the three parties seem to have come to the same conclusion: Only one issue remains to be resolved.

That issue is territory, namely the eastern Ukrainian region known as the Donbas. And based on their comments coming into the meeting, it is unlikely to be resolved.

It’s all about the eastern part of our country, it’s all about the land,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said, pointing to Russia’s long-standing – and previously rejected – demand that Kyiv gives up the parts of the Donbas it still controls.

While US President Donald Trump has touted a deal being close, Zelensky reiterated Thursday that Ukraine was not ready to hand over parts of its territory to Russia. And speaking after a meeting with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov made it clear Russia was also not willing to compromise.

He warned that there wouldn’t be any long-term settlement “without resolving the territorial issue,” repeating the threat that Russia would continue to pursue its goals “on the battlefield” until an agreement is reached.

“Russian’s, that’s what.”

Russians were a minority before they started the killing.

“Russian’s, that’s what.”

There are parts of the US occupied by Mexicans.

Would it be morally right for Mexico to tale those regions?

In Donbas, it was often unclear who was Russian and who was Ukrainian. Most of the people were primarily Russian speakers, many identified as Russian, others as Ukrainian. Interestingly, Ukrainian vs. Russian identification wasn't necessarily ethnic, some people with Ukrainian names (ending in -enko, etc) identified with Russia, while others with characteristically Russian names identified with Ukraine.

According to people I've meet from the region, nearly everyone who lived there really didn't give a damn if their neighbor identified as Russian or Ukrainian, the only ethnic tensions were stoked by nutcases and idiots on either side.

That all changed in 2014 and especially and 2021. Ironically, the effect of Putin's invasion (because it directly impacted Donbas more than the rest of Ukraine) was to make people who never strongly identified as Ukrainians and even those who identified more strongly with Russian culture start to see themselves civically as Ukrainians. So the net effect of Putin's invasion was to destroy Russian rather than Ukrainian identity and culture.

Stupid argument.

It might be if they decided to go to war with us and we lose.
I imagine our wonderful Euro/NATO allies would help us about as much with Mexico as they were willing to help Ukraine.

They were fierce in Greenland though.

“Stupid argument.

Exactly the same.

To you, Russia is justified in invading Ukraine because there are some ethnic Russians there,

Ergo, Mexico is justified in invading America because there are some ethnic Mexicans here.

AAAANDDD....don't forget the Don Cossacks.

“...After the Bolshevik Revolution the majority of the Don Cossacks remained strongly anti-Soviet and took an active part in the civil war of 1918-1920 on the side of the counterrevolutionary forces...”

There are not many left but there has always been a steady back and forth with these guys between the Ukraine and Russia. I never actually figured out where they fall in this mix up.

Mexico is justified in invading America because there are some ethnic Mexicans here.

Mexico is invading the southwest US and reconquering it without a shot being fired. They're achieving that end by extremely prolific breeding.

Wants? Russia already has almost all of Donbass.

It was only taken because the illegal coup we fomented in 2014 threatened Russia's naval base in Crimea, one it has operated since before the US Constitution was written.

There is no scenario where Ukraine gets any territory back.

“Simpleton”

GEMINI

People often resort to personal attacks, or ad hominem fallacies, when they feel defensive or out of logical arguments. It is a psychological shortcut used to shift focus away from a losing position by undermining the opponent’s credibility instead of their facts.

why do neoCONs always fail to disclose that fagboy Z in an illegal leader of ukraine who was installed by a coup d’etat orchestrated by the commie obama regime? And why do these same forever war neoCON scumbags fail to disclose that fagboy Z was bombing his own ukrainian people (who happened to be ethnic Russian) in Eastern Ukraine for years before Putin did anything about it?

No, war for the MIC is all they crave so they can line their pockets on the deaths of white Christians in another forever war they promoted.

I believe that's the proportion of the population that claimed to be Ukrainian according to the 1959 census.

Be aware that some pro-RF people might not choose to stick around in areas held by Ukrainian armed forces.
