Stuck between the US and Russia, Canada must prove it can defend its Arctic territory
BBC ^ | 2026.01.23 | Bernd Debusmann Jr

Canada's Arctic is a massive, treacherous, and largely inhospitable place, stretched out over nearly 4 million square kilometres of territory - but with a small population roughly equal to Blackburn in England or Syracuse, New York.

"You can take a map of continental Europe, put it on the Canadian Arctic, and there's room to spare," Pierre Leblanc, the former commander of the Canadian Forces Northern Area told the BBC. "And that environment is extremely dangerous."

Standing at the defence of that massive landmass is an aging string of early warning radars, eight staffed military bases and about 100 full-time Coast Guard personnel covering 162,000km of coast, about 60% of Canada's total oceanfront.

The Arctic region is the scene of intense geopolitical competition, bordered by Russia and the US on either side of the North Pole - and increasingly attractive to China, which has declared itself a "near Arctic state" and vastly expanded its fleet of naval vessels and icebreakers.

Standing in the middle is Canada, whose population is a small fraction of the larger Arctic players.

Nearly four years after Arctic security was thrust into the headlines following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the defence of Canada's far north has again been brought to the forefront of public consciousness by Donald Trump's designs on Greenland, a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark that the White House says is vital to safeguarding the US from would-be enemies abroad.

Canada's Arctic has not gone unnoticed by the Trump administration, which has reportedly become increasingly concerned by perceived vulnerabilities to US adversaries, and in April signed an executive order underscoring American "commitment to ensuring both freedom of navigation and American domination in the Arctic waterways."

The Canadian government, for its part, has sought to reassure the US and Nato allies that it is doing its part...

Canada will fight hard if their enemies are white like Russia. Canada is completely Chinese controlled. Obese and woke rainbow soldiers. And now reportedly 25 percent foreign born. Trump needs to crush Canada and bring those pieces of sh$t to heel. Major threat to our Nkrth.

What’s the mental image here: that Canada is now like Poland in 1939, trapped between Hitler and Stalin?

There is no ground threat to the north so it doesn’t matter how chubby the Canadians are, lol.

The issue is just a matter of upgrading missile defense, and being able to protect the defense stations themselves from any kind of intrusion or sabotage.

“The Canadian government, for its part, has sought to reassure the US and Nato allies that it is doing its part...”

Nobody believes that.

Canada is not capable, even if they had the will.

Originally, it was British territory, part of the only superpower between a major power and significant power. Now it is relatively weak between a major power and the only superpower.

Probably the invasion of Ukraine and the threats to Greenland have then concerned.

A: It CAN’T.

B: The Carney barker needs to cede control of all of Canaduh North of a roughly 100 mi. border strip to the USA to protect northern America from foes.

LOL. Canada counts on the USA to protect them. Pretty much have for the past century.

The DEW Line needs to be upgraded to the Golden Dome.

Does the Carney barker think the CCP is going to accomplish that?

A CCP base on the Queen Elizabeth Islands on NW passage shipping lanes?
US needs Greenland sovereign bases up and down the coast.

It should be noted that the GDP of Russia is only slightly greater than that of Canada by about 10%. Canada is totally capable of defending itself as GDP is a function of what a nation can do for war. Canada has chosen not to defend itself as it has relied on the USA for decades.

The GDP of the West is multiple times greater than Russia and China. We have the ability to crush enemies but not now as we are not on a war footing. With inferior economies they are surpassing us in the ability to wage war.

It is that damn simple, “prepare for war and be willing to destroy your enemy in total war and you will not need to go to war, your enemy wishes not to die.

Canada is fully prepared to freeze all Russian trucker’s bank accounts and kill every Russian ostrich they send down through the Arctic.

Canada only spends 1.3% of GDP on defense. It has been mooching off the U.S. for more than 20 years. Its cumulative deficit is now something like 14% of GDP.

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/MS.MIL.XPND.GD.ZS?locations=CA

Reflecting its underfunding of national defense, Canada is TOTALLY UNABLE to defend its territorial waters (not to speak of joining in the mutual defense of the North Atlantic).

Nobody is doing an amphibious landing on the arctic border, and marching through 1000 miles(or km) of tundra. The only way to land troops is via air, and nothing is getting past NORAD.

Oddly enough, Canada and Denmark have had a long running war over Hans Island. A very polite war, each side leaving gifts for the other’s soldiers.

The Northwest Passage in best of years opens up for limited navigation for about six weeks in late August into September. Then it freezes up again. In some recent years (and most years further back in a colder arctic climate) the NWP does not open at all to shipping.

There is no credible threat to anyone from China sending military assets to arctic Canada, most of them would just freeze to death before anyone could locate them. As to Canada not being able to defend them, that is hypothetical and based on almost no credible scenarios. Also you have to factor in that Canada has signed NORAD and NATO treaties which require assistance from allies. This is not a sign of weakness as some MAGA mouthpieces are saying. All the western countries decided after 1945 that this is how they wanted to defend the territory involved. For Trump and others to suggest this is some imposition on America is just a rewriting of history. If you want a different arrangement, propose one, stop whining and pretending we are unreasonable people. This tactic of insulting people and refusing to hold discussions or to define terms is childish and reminds me of the behavior of teenage girls.

Canadians are reasonable people, if you have something you want to discuss, SAY WHAT YOU ARE THINKING and stop playing adolescent mind games. This is not making your country great again, it looks like a madhouse run by mental patients.

Canada promised a air craft carrier, 10 fighter jets and a division of troops.

After the exchange rate it turned out to be a piper cub, a canoe with two Mounties.
