US to cut roughly 200 NATO positions, sources say

The United States plans to reduce the number of personnel it has stationed within several key NATO command centers, a move that could intensify concerns in Europe about Washington's commitment to the alliance, three sources familiar with the matter said this week.

As part of the move, which the Trump administration has communicated to some European capitals, the U.S. will eliminate roughly 200 positions from the NATO entities that oversee and ‌plan the alliance's military and intelligence operations, said the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private diplomatic conversations.

Among the bodies that will be affected, said the sources, are the UK-based NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre and the Allied Special Operations ‌Forces Command in Brussels. Portugal-based STRIKFORNATO, which oversees some maritime operations, will also be cut, as will several other similar NATO entities, the sources said.

The sources did not specify why the U.S. had decided to cut the number of staff dedicated to the NATO roles, but the moves broadly align with the Trump administration's stated intention to shift more resources toward the Western Hemisphere.

The Washington Post first reported the decision.

I want to see NATO completely removed from US soil and put somewhere else. I don’t care where.

Denmark is NATo. What is Denmark contributing to securing Greenland besides telling the US to defend it as the only really working member of NATO

Denmark isn’t defending it for us. We’re paying them Via NATO to defend it

Why do they own it?

I thought NATO was this organization where everyone had a voice, guided purely by a long list of bylaws, and we couldn’t just do as we please! LOL

NATO has always been “our club” both literally to beat someone with, and figuratively to become a member of.

If we want, we can fast track members in (Baltic states), or in the case of some, we can make it almost impossible to join.

We were the ones that more or less pushed for NATO to reform and expand its scope in both mission types and geographically outside of what used to be their AOR. That started in full earnest post 9-11 under Bush W. and Rumsfeld.

NATO is in Syria and Iraq because “we” pushed for that, with many European states being very reluctant to accept this. NATO conducted an air campaign on Libya because we pushed for that...

https://www.nato.int/en/what-we-do/operations-and-missions/nato-mission-iraq

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Unified_Protector

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Active_Fence

I am not sure what the hatred for NATO is since it’s a collective security organization we benefit from and are more or less the head of.

Granted, post 9-11 things were whacky. We were attacked and basically our so-called allies and friends came in and got to decide if they wanted to help, and if so, how, when, and how much. Most avoiding any combat missions, literally jockeying over who gets the safer areas in Afghanistan...

But the era of where NATO is a one-way road ended.

In fact, maybe too much so. Ukraine is basically caused by NATO’s willingness to expand into areas we promised we wouldn’t, positioning ourselves to where we become a threat to Russia, and where an organization where part of their charter clearly states they will not expand into contested or areas of active conflict, we went anyway!

—The Membership Action Plan (MAP): the MAP requires aspiring nations to show they have settled international, ethnic, or external territorial disputes by peaceful means. (Ukraine was in a civil war)

https://www.nato.int/en/what-we-do/partnerships-and-cooperation/membership-action-plan-map (quick, lets edit this page in 2024!!!)

—Avoiding Automatic War: The core of NATO is Article 5, which states an attack on one is an attack on all. Allowing a country with an ongoing war to join would immediately force NATO into a direct, active conflict with the opposing party.

—Stability Requirements: Candidates are expected to have a stable, functioning democratic political system. (Ukraine was and remains a junta, definition:
a military or political group that rules a country after taking power by force.)

None of the rules really matter.

We can make up new rules and change them, ignore the ones we don’t like, interpret things any way we want. Most people don’t know better anyhow.

Ukraine was more or less in a civil war with the West secretly backing the nationalists (sometimes not so secret as with arms deliveries and US advisors on the ground 2014 onward), and the Russians backing the ethnic Russians in Ukraine, and we were going to bring Ukraine into NATO anyhow.

This wasn’t the head of NATO, the heads of member states making a decision. It was Biden making a decision: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukrainian-president-zelenskiy-holding-talks-with-biden-adviser-says-2021-12-09/

Ukraine is where “we” (not our partners), where Biden, gave the green light for full speed ahead with Ukraine’s NATO accession, and it’s a case where an organization whose purpose is to create peace and stability caused a war and instability.

NATO is OK, but what we did in Ukraine was stupid. Unless of course, it was part of a greater geo-political strategy to weaken Russia so we can go after their possessions of Syria, Libya, Iraq and Venezuela.

In that case, you have the Euro’s flipping 1/2 the bill, dealing with the bulk of refugees and post war clean up, the Ukraine doing nearly all the bleeding, and us benefitting. Even if this is the true scenario, NATO served its purpose.

NATO’s Article 5 was invoked only once. Not for Europe. Not for Canada. For America, after 9/11. Allies fought and died alongside the U.S.

That was 25 years ago when Europe was still Europe and we shared similar values with them.

By 2050, Western Europe will become Islamic.

Estimated shares of the population aged 0–29 that are Muslim in the mid-2020s are roughly 33% in France, 38% in Sweden, 28% in the United Kingdom, 33% in Belgium, and 35% in Germany.

We're moving on and it's time for USA to secure our own interests.
