Trump links Greenland threat to Nobel Peace Prize snub, EU eyes trade retaliation

PARIS/OSLO, Jan 19 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump linked his drive to take control of Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, saying he no longer thought "purely of Peace" as the row over the Arctic island on Monday threatened to reignite a trade war with Europe.

Trump has intensified his push to wrest sovereignty over Greenland from fellow NATO member Denmark, threatening punitive tariffs on countries which stand in his way and prompting the European Union to weigh hitting back with its own measures.

The dispute is threatening to upend the NATO alliance that has underpinned Western security for decades and which was already under strain over the war in Ukraine and Trump's refusal to protect allies which do not spend enough on defence.

It has also plunged trade relations between the EU and the U.S., the bloc's biggest export market, into renewed uncertainty after the two sides painstakingly reached a trade deal last year in response to Trump's swingeing tariffs.

In a written message to Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere that was seen by Reuters, Trump said: "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee annoyed Trump by awarding the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize not to him but to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. She gave her medal last week to Trump during a White House meeting, though the Nobel Committee said the prize cannot be transferred, shared or revoked.

Trump is becoming ever more petty and unstable. He may have dementia. The congressional GOP is afraid that if they criticize him he will condemn them and hurt their re-election chances, but if they don't try to restrain Trump when he is off the rails, voters will punish that.

Q: Does our republic have any allies among the governments of Western Europe?

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that “you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.” Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!

I don’t ever remember NATO telling Denmark this. Again, a fabricated fantasy based on a boogey man threat for a country not a single soul gave two sh!ts about 2 years ago and for decades.

The psyops is getting tough to stomach

..Trump’s refusal to protect allies which do not spend enough on defence...

Denmark spends zip nadda on their defence.
They expect someone else to protect their far flung territory from Russia and China.
Yes, we have to protect Greenland, but the folks doing the protecting need to get something in return

There’s good trolling, bad trolling, and trolling that is in such spectacular bad taste that it does nothing except convince allies as well as enemies that you’ve gone completely bonkers.

Telling the NORWEGIAN prime minister that because POTUS is seriously so butthurt over him not getting an award from a totally independent institution that he has no influence over, that was awarded for the period PRECEDING his reelection, and which nobody even nominated Trump for, he’s not ruling out a hostile takeover of DANISH land, is a bit off piste.

Serdar Turkmenbashi of Turkmenistan is a businessman turned Dear Leader who passed a law changing the words for two days of the week to his own name. He’s catching up with the Kims on personality cultism.

His antics would be less amusing if this whackjob was destabilising international relations, international trade, or threatening to annexe a neighbour...or if he had sole launch authority over a nuclear triad.

Context is key.

I saw this letter from Trump to the Norwegian official circulating on X late last night and thought that it was fake. The level of self-regard, pettiness, and vindictiveness on display could only be a caricature

Apparently, it's real. It's hard to believe, but it's real.

Trump being stymied at every turn by the administrative state and establishment figures within his own administration was the problem in his first term. Having no guardrails at all around him is going to be the ruination of his second

What? Where do you get that information from? According to the CIA World Factbook in 2025 Denmark spent an estimated 3.2 % of GDP on their military.
