24 members of Congress are 80 or older. More than half are running for re-election.

WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 85, is heading for the exits after nearly four decades in Congress. So is her longtime deputy, Rep. Steny Hoyer, 86, and former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 83.

But of the two dozen members of the Silent Generation now serving in the 119th Congress, more than half (13) have decided to run again in 2026, according to an NBC News review.

In total, this Congress is the third-oldest in U.S. history, with an average age of 58.9 years at the start of this session one year ago. The median age in the U.S. is 39.1.

Among Congress’ 24 Silent Generation members (defined as those born from 1928 to 1945, from the start of the Great Depression to the end of World War II), the average age is 83.8. Most are Democrats. Sen. Chuck Grassley (92) is the oldest, and Rep. David Scott (80) is the youngest. Seven members of the cohort are 85 or older.

By the end of this year, the average age will be nearly 85. Ten members will be that age or older, and three will be at or knocking on 90’s door.

I never understood why anyone who is 80+ would want to do anything other than visit their kids and play with their grandkids. If you are over 80 and poor and must work, God Bless You. I understand that. But these elected officials need to go - Democrat or Republican.

They most likely have lackies surrounding them like Joe Biden did to vouch to the media and public that they are compos mentis.

None of them want to give up the gravy train.

Hopefully if they are not compos mentis, enough of the voting public will see this - as we did with Senile Joe - to vote them out.

Are you for getting rid of Grassley?

If term limits worked, California would have a responsible legislature. Instead it's a revolving door for nameless lobbyists.

Are you over 80.

When you really reward seniority, you get more seniors.

“I never understood why anyone who is 80+ would want to do anything other than visit their kids and play with their grandkids.”

Charles Grassley might be able to do both things at once — stay in DC and still play with his grandkid:

Grassley’s grandson Patrick (age 42) is the Speaker of the Iowa state House and had been rumored as a candidate for the other U.S. Senate seat in Iowa which is being vacated by Joni Ernst. If the younger Grassley were to run and win....

However it now seems more likely that Patrick will stay in his current office and run for re-election in 2026, then possibly will seek grandad’s seat in 2028 when the elder one had damn well better retire (assuming he even makes it that long).

out of a hypothetical 24 fossilized congresscritters,
12 want to be reelected so that they can steal, shake down, collect more graft $$$
11 want to be reelected for the “power position” or semi-shield being in Congress provides them against arrest, trial, and imprisonment for their previous stealing, shakedowns, and graft
and maybe, just maybe, 1 wants to be reelected to continue honest representation, service to his/her constituents (although this last item is pure speculation without any basis in fact or experience that I know of)

I’d put many an 80-year old up against some 35 year old TWOT with purple hair. Age has nothing to do with competence.

Agreed.

As more time goes on I am finding it increasingly hard to make sense of the cult of term limits.

The left with its universities can indoctrinate an unlimited supply, so term limits doesn’t hurt progressives at all - it’s just a revolving door.

This is strangely not an outrage.

24/535 is roughly 4.4%. The % of the US population over 80 is 3.4%. It’s actually somewhat representative.

“Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: ‘The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.”
