Kremlin: Trump Right About Zelenskyy Holding Up Peace Deal in Ukraine
Newsmax ^ | January 15, 2026 | Reuters

The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russia agreed with President Donald Trump that it was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, not Russia, who was holding up a potential peace deal to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump's assessment in an interview with Reuters contrasted that of European allies, who have consistently argued that Moscow has ‍little interest in ending the fighting and wants to take as much ‍territory as it can while seeking to stave off further Western sanctions.

"I think he's ready to make a deal," Trump said of Putin when speaking to Reuters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. "I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal."

Asked why U.S.-led negotiations had not yet resolved Europe's largest land conflict since World War II, Trump responded: "Zelenskyy."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters when asked that he concurred with Trump: "I agree, that is indeed the case. President Putin and the Russian ‍side remain open (to talks). The Russian position is well known. It is well known to the American negotiators, to President Trump, and to the leadership of the Kyiv regime."

Russia controls about a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014. Moscow wants Kyiv to withdraw its troops from parts of the Donetsk region that Russia does not control but has claimed as its own. Ukraine - which has rejected the idea of gifting territory to Moscow - wants the fighting halted along the current front lines. The U.S. has proposed a ‍free economic zone if Ukraine pulls its troops back.

U.S.-led negotiations have been centered in recent weeks on security guarantees for ‌a post-war Ukraine after a potential peace deal, though some European officials have cautioned Putin is highly unlikely to accept some of the terms.

Apparently there has been deliberate "misunderstanding" and quoting, of President Trump's comments, by a large part of Western Main Stream Media.

Reuters has suddenly taken the position that President Trump tends to believe Russia more than Zelensky, an unexplainable shift by Reuters.

Well, DUH!

Zelensky is holding up peace talks and negotiations. He’s not willing to concede any territory to Putin/Russia. Putin want’s peace on his terms, no questions asked and nobody standing in his way.

Trump just wants peace at any cost, with the cost being all on Ukraine’s side. One-sided negotiations are not negotiations at all. So, duh!, Zelensky was always gonna stand on th way of Putin/Trump doing negotiations with only Ukraine giving up land.

Whowouldathunk it that Zelensky was going to stand up for Ukraine’s rights.

One-sided negotiations means that, the one-siders are the ones blocking a peace deal. That means Trump and Putin.

There is a point where cutting your losses, especially when 2+ million draftable people have left, is needed, if you want to keep anything.

Exactly right! ;-)

Ukraine invaded Russia in 2022 and now occupies 20% of Russia, while also bombing Russian electricity infrastructure and turning off the lights and hear to all Russians. Millions of frozen dead Russians being delivered to funeral homes, who can't handle the traffic.

Waht losses are those? Russia is not progressing beyond the 20% of Ukraine they have held since 2022, and getting ready to enter the fifth year of war.

FACTS are that Russia has suffered many times as many casualties as Ukraine, and has suffered a lot more damage to Russian infrastructure and to their military and economy.

So, when to you think Putin will be ready to concede defeat?

“It’s not a peace deal, it’s a surrender deal.”

So what? Let’s end this war. It is precisely because of this harmful pride an indignation that wars flare up constantly in Europe.

Take the loss and live in prosperity thereafter, that’s what I say.

Think of it in biblical terms: David and Goliath.

Little David has taken on Goliath the giant, and the giant has been bloodied to the extent where he's had to ask for negotiations on his terms, but not likely to happen. Goliath is in denial.

To date, the cities being ravaged are all in the Russian speaking, Russian supporting areas. There is a subconscious lack of perception of cost in this by the Zelensky people.

As Russia advances, the damage starts to appear in the areas that were not electing pro-Russia governments pre 2014. This damage will get felt more severely.

As it unfolds, what will happen is the negotiating position will be to have Russia withdraw from those newly destroyed areas, newly occupied areas that were not pro Russian pre 2014. After Russia expends effort to occupy them, it seems unlikely they would withdraw.

It overall, fundamentally, derives from delusion. The Zelensky people are getting money from the EU, or at least it was voted to happen. This undercuts any impression on their part that they are losing. When funded, the sense of desperation lessens and the willingness to concede . . . anything . . . is lessened.

Tell Putin to take the loss and pull out of Ukraine. Putin has no right to take any Ukraine territory and after the war, Russia should be forced to pay for restoration of Ukraine. Or, Ukraine should be allowed to take Russian territory as payment for the losses Russia brought to them.

There is no such thing as pro-Russia lands or people in Ukraine, not now and not before 2014.

Putin and Russia are the ones creating the perception, all for justifying the invasion of Ukraine land.

When it comes to voting, nobody in Ukraine was allowed to vote for Russian interests; it doesn’t work that way. And no oblasts or territory in Ukraine could vote to secede on their own or vote to allow Russian influence in any part of Ukraine. It would be the same as Californians voting to be annexed by Mexico or ruled by Mexico. Duh! Not allowed and not gonna happen.
